Gummo

Besides me, did anyone see any similarities between this film and Harmony Korine's "Gummo"? Does anyone know if DGG got any inspiration from that?

reply

Yes, I do note some similarities. Both "Gummo" and "George Washington" are important entries into the "portrait of a place/time" genre. They've also got a similar setting. It is possible DGG was influenced by it, but I think his most primary influence is Terrence Mallick, and also Charles Burnett's "Killer of Sheep". I don't think GW and Gummo share a lot stylistically, despite their similarities.

When I first saw this movie I thought to myself "similar to Gummo."

I like both movies.

Lots of similarities in style... I enjoyed George Washington a whole lot more, though!

Yes. Both films are very similar, matter of fact.

I actually just signed on to look for this film because I couldn't remember the title, but I wanted to recommend it and "Gummo" to a friend, as I was telling him they had similarities. The odd-ball characters, the aimless youth, the poverty, the despair - very similar themes in both.
