I am a nanny with a burning question...why is Caillou bald? Was it ever explained? It just kind of bugs me--most 4-year-olds have hair, and his entire family has full heads of it. Somebody help!!

Ok first of all, to the people who hate the show. Go away, I mean, I don't like it or anything, just the person who makes his voice, I like her. Anyways, what are you guys, teens or maybe even older, and what? You're watching the show? Maybe that's why you hate it. It's not aimed for you guys you know.
Anyways, again...On what I heard, he is supposed to have cancer...The show was based on that and to help the childeren with cancer as well...
I actually found out why he is bald on the Chouette website (the publisher of the books that the T.V. series is based on). He did NOT have cancer. The reason he is bald is so he represents all children. He doesn't have one specific hair color, therefore, all children can relate to him, or can see themselves in him. Personally, I think that's kind of a lame reason, but whatever. As I said in the original post on this board, I'm a nanny. The children I take care of watch other shows and can relate to the characters even if they do have a specific hair color. I don't like Caillou very much, but I needed to know why he was bald because I generally have to sit through at least 2 or 3 episodes a week with the kids. Now I know. :)

1- the animator has Charles Schlutz syndrome and couldn't draw hair very well. 2- on the show he started as a baby, then a toddler, then a preschooler. they didn't want to give him hair because people already identified him as bald.
the second ones the only reason that would make sense seeing as everyone else has hair on the show
Caillou is bold because the boy in the original book series on which the show is based (yes, there was a book series) was bald. And at the official Caillou website, their FAQ even says that kids never comment on Caillou's baldness and if asked about it, they don't care.
BTW, Arthur on "Arthur" is also bald, and hardly anyone ever goes on about that.
Arthur is an animal, I don't think they'd spend their time making fur for him. But in one of the episodes, they zoom into Arthur and Buster, and you see that he has hair.
That's good. But in any case, the answer still stands. So can this issue please be put to bed?
"Frequently Asked Questions
Q. Why is Caillou bald?
A. His character design is based upon the much younger literary property that existed prior to the animation series. Generally, for children, Caillou is a larger than life image of a preschooler. They don’t care about the hair issue. Not only do they not bring it up, but when asked to focus on it specifically in research groups, they laughed and replied that “he just doesn’t have any”."
So then there are many possible answers but no actual answer to the question, why Caillou is bald.
I guess we just choose from what we have so far (in no particular order):
1. He has cancer 2. The artist couldn't draw hair very well 3. He represents all children so they can relate to him 4. The French meaning for Caillou is "little rock,"(well I guess his head looks like a little rock) 5. It's folic symbol 6. He's bald just because he is (and I don't know that's probably the type of hair cut he likes or has to get) 7. He's a larger than life pre-schooler 8. He started out bald in the old stories/episodes, and as he grew there was probably no need to add hair so the children would recognize him (that or the artist was too lazy to draw hair)
If he "represents all children" it would make more sense for him to have hair since the vast majority of 4-year-olds have hair. They most likely did it so the character could have a trademark, even if it is off-putting
Iv'e always wondered why he was bald. Maybe he DOES have cancer or maybe the writers WANT to repersent the children of the world. I don't know. But come on people it's a KIDS SHOW. Do you think 5-year olds are going to care that he's bald?
Because everyone who visits this page is apparently unable to read and can't understand Chouette's official explination for why Caillou is bald, here is it in easier words:
In the original books the cartoon was based on, Caillou was very young and had not grown hair yet. When they developed the cartoon, they decided to make Caillou older, but kept the same character design (with a bald head) because that image was already established.
im absolutely POSITIVE why caillou is bald. it IS based on a little GIRL, (hence the girl voice!) who had cancer, and had to go through chemo at age FOUR. the writer of caillou books was related to this girl, and to cheer her up , he made up stories and drew pictures of her new cartoon FRIEND, Caillou, who also has no hair, just like her. Later he wrote books , which turned into a TV show. if you search caillou on google, there is a link for a Caillou Cancer Foundation , to raise money for kids just like Caillou . Bald. and that is the REAL answer . i've done research .
