Greg Proops

What's the deal with Greg Proops doing Bob's voice in the new series? I like him, but his voice is all wrong. Even my kids noticed.

reply

I don't now, but I noticed that all of the other voices were different, too. Spud was the worst.

reply

My local PBS shows it on Saturday mornings, and I noticed it as well this morning. I agree with you Rufus. BTW, you must like the Marx Brothers.

reply

Oh, I agree!! Greg Proops voice is ruining Bob, it sounds nothing like the original voice at all. I have a seven year old nephew who loves Bob the Builder and I admit that I kinda like it to, it's very entertaining and fun and gives a great message to kids.

But I honestly don't like this change in the series at all.

His voice only changed in the American version, though, right? As far as I know, it's still Neil Morrissey doing it in the UK. I have no idea why they think it's ok to just change voices like that, all of a sudden. What's weirdest is some characters keeping their original British voices, like Spud. To *me*, personally, that's a blessing - Spud shouldn't sound like anything but that. But then again...

My 3 year old saw the 'new' voices on PBS, and when he heard Spud, he told me that that wasn't Spud because he sounds funny. When I heard that British accent, I thought it was so strange...just can't associate Spud with an accent. My son turned off the TV and chose to look at his BTB VHS cassettes instead. Go figure, they find something good and then go and mess it up. **

My brother watches it here in England.

When we went on holiday to America we saw it on TV and it sounded so wierd. Lofty's voice now sounds normal (not his squeky sad voice), and because of that, his 'yeah, i think so' line isn't funny.

but the worst bit? the theme tune! because of the cockney accent, they could rhyme 'Spud' and 'should'. but with greg, it just doesn't work.

I have to agree. The newer "sunflower valley" episodes have sunk the show.

I admit I live in America and watch it from time to time(still am trying to figure out the American Voice Cast but imdb doesn't list it)

As Far as I can tell here in America (the older better episodes) Alan Marriott voices Scoop and used to voice the one of a kind Spud(if you also notice Spud used to have his own lil theme song played in the background when he would come on screen...He even did a dance number in one ep singing about Apples! As well as being able to quickcostumechange [think Bugs Bunny] in a spin to his Top Hat like they did back in the classic cartoons!) & Mr. Bentley and a few Additional voices. Lorelei King is good for Wendy as was Bill "Duffy" Dufris just perfect for Bob (you can hardley tell that it's Neil singing the theme song infact),and I would think Dizzy's the same here just without an Accent. (no offense to anyone in the uk for my criticism/comments)

Now changing something like Football to Soccer...ok that's understandable...but what they did to what was supposed to be a spin off?

Personally I think Greg Proops is only best at voicing Beasley (the guy who lives in the Yurt)
They brought in a few new characters, some good like Packer and Dodger and the MacDonalds (Kate Harbour voices the scottish Meg McDonald quite nicely)
and of course then there's Scrambler, whose "ohh man" moan can get on your nerves after a while...who does he think he is? that fox from Dora? (who also happens to have the catch phrase "ohh man!")
Mr. Bentley got elected Mayor of Sunflower Valley and now sounds like someone impersonating Peter Salles (which I guess is an improvment) and Lofty sounds cuter...he even says "Yeah,I think so." faster. Farmer Pickles sounds a bit different as well.

According to Wikipedia Morrissey was supposed to be brought on to voice the "new and improved" Spud...After hearing him and the Online Trailer to Built to Be Wild I'm guessing it's Rob Rackstraw (who presumably does most of the uk voices as well since he's Credited on here as Scoop/Muck/Travis/Spud/etc.)

The only good thing I can say about the newer "Spud" is the cork/snoring episode did fit him well...even the Spud the Tree filler where he says "Now it's Time for fall!" but other then those two things he just isn't the real deal. WHY did they have to change things??? What was wrong with Alan Marriott anyway? (I mean he still voices Scoop)

Also you can hear both Scoop (Alan) and Dizzy (Kate) in the Secret Show on nicktoons network. If Rackstraw is voicing the "newer" Spud...he makes a much better sounding maniacal Professor Professor (think Q to 007 if he was a short mad scientist)

but anyway I still would like to know the cast list for the UK Voices (if they were changed or not) and the US List (Pre and Post Sunflower Valley) if anybody has or knows of it.

Just my 2ยข/Tuppence

PS: I don't watch whose line btw.

I liked the voice of Bob from 2007-2010. It was nice and calming compared to Proops. The guy that took over in 2010 does the voice a bit softer, but too soft for my tastes.

Apparently he did 15 episodes in 2005. My son is only 1 year old, so he doesn't quite notice the differences in the voices... yet. Of course, I kinda like Greg doing the voices, but I'm a Whose Line fan and have been doing improv myself for close to 9 years now.

I've only seen a few episodes, with my toddler, and they've all had him as the voice of Bob. I thought it sounded like Greg, but I wasn't sure till tonight...decided to check it out cause my dad noticed the voice sounded familiar too.
