Remorse.
I think that the late President Richard M. Nixon was completely remorseful for the wrong actions he had taken when he was president of the United States. I have seen the documentary made by A & E and it was stated that Nixon was experiencing depression for the first two years (1974-1976) after he resigned from the presidency. When he was interviewed by Sir David Frost, everyone saw that he wasn't feigning his expression of being at almost tears when he apologized to the American people.
Aside from that, he knew that he also failed his mother,Hannah Nixon, who had high moral expectations of him. And finally, he has nothing to gain from a fake apology for he knew that he was severely hated by the American people during that time when the interview with David Frost was conducted. He has retired from politics and his legacy will never be redeemed with the Watergate incident.
He was hammered during the interview for the mistakes he committed by the British interviewer. He really had no choice but to answer the questions asked with honesty and candor.
