there is going to be a remake of jsa!

i just read an article about a hollywood remake of jsa....now that takes the cake of all remake attempts. instead of using joint security area between north and south korea as the setting, they are going to use the border between u.s. and mexico, involving illegal immigration. ridiculous....i never thought jsa, which is set specifically in korea, dealing specifically with korean tension at the jsa would be made into an american remake.

reply

Truly a ridiculous idea. Why don't they just make a film about the US-mexican border, without resorting to remaking this film. Pointless, and lazy.

they (whoever "they" might be) are silly!
it´s such a good, touching film with such beautiful pictures, such good actors and such fine music - all fitting one to another ... why should it be re- done in a worse way?

"it´s such a good, touching film with such beautiful pictures" -- yes

"such good actors" -- acting is bad

"and such fine music" -- ????

reply

That sounds horrible... very, very horrible... Worse than Battle Royale being remade with all American teenage actors like Lindsay Lohan and Aaron Carter... no wait... that one sounds bad too... but that one they haven't said anything about the actors yet... so I'm still saying this is the worst idea for a remake yet...

- The thought of Lindsay Lohan and Aaron Carter killing each other sounds great to me

reply

I've just read about this elsewhere. Just UNBELIEVABLE...

reply

I just read the article too. Wow, I couldn't believe it. Not too long ago I was thinking about movies that Hollywood couldn't remake and JSA was the first one to pop into my head.

the human folly is really unlimited!

who´s this escapist idiot?
who are those idiots, thinking of giving money for this?
(and: who will be those idiots, watching THAT instead of the beautiful, touching original?)

still hard (ly?) believing this

Ha. The premise for the remake reminds me of the whole Seven Samurai being remade as The Magnificent Seven situation. As Kurosawa pointed out with his film cowboys and samurai live by totally different codes so the remake can't help but make no sense. If what you're saying is right with the immigrants and US/Mexican border stuff then this film won't make any sense either.

However with the knowledge of the original it may be funny to watch how badly they screw up. Just the idea of comparing the Korean security zone with the US/Mexican border is pretty funny, in a sad kinda way.

Anyway as I mentioned on one of the Oldboy remake forums its better that Hollywood remake Chan-Wook Park's films then him going to Hollywood and being stopped from making great films.

Once again an original idea is taken and is attempted to be remade by Hollywood. If it isn't foreign films (such as Shall We Dance, the Internal Affairs movies with Andy Lau and Tony Leung, etc.) then it's old American television shows and movies (War of the Worlds, Bewitched, Dukes of Hazzard, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory to name a few newer remakes.) I agree with the poster earlier who said they should just do a movie about the US/Mexican border and don't even try to remake this movie.

do you guys have a scan of the article? i want to check it out.

reply

Obviously, they did not get the film...

reply

so someone is stirring *beep* up again? why does this always happen?

reply

Yeah but megnificent seven is a good film which doesn't over do trying to remake the film. I am sure it's possible to take some good ideas from the film and use their own to make a altogether original production. It's better than copying it almost entirely but with worse acting and a *beep* script.

The truth has yet to be seen.

The closest film to JSA I can think of in American terms in Three Burials, which deal with very similar themes (eg friends across the borders, a killing, flashing back and forth between after the killing and the friendship before, no one wanting to find out who did it).

Both JSA and Three Burials are amazing movies, so maybe Hollywood should just leave it at that.

reply

Three burials wAS dull

reply

so did the american remake even happen?

Rob Zombie is one of the greatest directors today

There already is a film about US-Mexican illegal immigrants, I think it's called Lone Star and it involved an old case about murdered illegal immigrants or something.

But if this does get remade I do wonder how each side gets perceived politically, as illegal immigration is a very touchy issue among many Latin Americans.

That link is the article.

"David H. Franzoni, the producer and screenwriter of the Academy Award-winning epic blockbuster ``Gladiator,’’ will make his film directorial debut with a remake of the hit 2000 Korean movie ``JSA (Joint Security Area).’’

Thus, the demilitarized zone between the two Koreas, the setting for the original film, will be changed to the U.S.-Mexico border region, the daily reported."

There's more to the article too. Check the link out.

It is the Gladiator guy, so it might not be too *beep* That is, if he gets his act together and changes it back to the two Koreas.

Mexico and the U.S....

WORST. IDEA. EVER.

WOW. There is NO parallel between Mexico/U.S. and South Korea/North Korea.

reply

There is NO parallel between Mexico/U.S. and South Korea/North Korea.

Sure there is. There's totally two different countries involved in each scenario. Or was that not what you meant .

well the conflict between north and south korea is massive and quite hostile. USA and mexico? bah.

I await this remake with great hopes. Imagine the daring required to represent a scenario where an American befriends, of all things, a Mexican. My God! But what director would have the guts to tell such a radical story? I smell Oscars for all involved.

If they really have to remake JSA into an American context then at least make it serious. Perhaps the story could be set in West Berlin, Guantanamo Bay, or even the original JSA. But the US-Mexican border? That is just insulting.
