Does anyone know what the song is that is playing throughout? I really need to find a copy of it...

well, Guy told my film class at u of w that he had to get the piece from some russian mafia guys, and that he was standing in the rain on a payphone, trying to contact them, and they sent it, and he never sent them any money. So he has this semi-licensed song in that movie. And can I just say that Guy is one of the greatest, most original director ever? I can? Okay, I will. And he's a super nice guy. Makes us aspiring film-makers have a little hope.

The music is credited as "Time Forward" by Georgi Sviridov, "with permission from the Sviridov Foundation and Meloydiya (c) 1968". The music appears to be part of the soundtrack of a Russian film "Vremya, vperyod!" ("Time, Forward"). A little quick searching shows the music may be available on various CDs - try this link for one:

or hunt on Amazon or other CD sources for "Time, Forward" or "Sviridov" - there seems to be a Meloydiya collection with this on it (Amazon ASIN B0002OP0Z4), which may be Maddin's version.

Amazingly how Sviridov's music fits in.
We Russians know it by heart because the only news broadcasting program in the late Soviet times (mid to late 80s) used it at the beginning.
This film is a wonderful homenage to Russian silent filmmaking, a truly inspiring masterpiece, strongly supported by Sviridov's Time Forward.
Sure this CD is available at Melodya, as well as half a dozen of other Sviridov's works - but do they export it? no idea...

An almost certain influence on Maddin's movie is a short film from 1967, BEGINNING by the director Artavazd Peleshian:

the giveaway being that Peleshian also used this same piece of music "Time, Forward" as the soundtrack for his film.
