Ridiculous plot with many holes, but one major one

Why couldn't the thieves find out the number of the grave another way? They knew the girl had been found wandering on that island where there were paupers graves. They had to know he was buried there. They knew she had a number in her mind, but they didn't know what the number referred to? What?
Aren't there records of paupers' graves somewhere?
This plot is utterly ridiculous. Unless I'm missing something. I don't get why they knew she had a number hidden in her mind related to where the jewel was. How did they know that unless they knew it related to the grave of her father?

they knew it was a grave and they knew it was on the island that's why Michael Douglas Character said to Sean Bean "i think you know where" they just didn't know which number was

I still think Patrick could have accessed an index of the graves somewhere. Even if the occupant is a 'John Doe', there must be a record of the circumstances of his death.

It seems to me that crooks in films always choose the most convoluted way of achieving their ends, even if it makes them almost impossible to succeed. Maybe they know a film is going to be made of them.

How did they know it was in his grave? There was no way they could have known that. Why would they even think of it being there. Why would someone put a 10 million dollar stone in a coffin? They didn't know it was in the doll and they didn't know the doll was in the coffin. Why would they be so sure a messed up little girl would have the grave number memorized? She was a little kid when her father died who was in a mental home since his death so she had no reason to know the grave number anyways.

I still enjoyed the movie which I just watched again since its been so many years since I rented the DVD. A lot of these kind of movies have plot holes but this movie had quite a big 1 and a few others also.

Also damned convenient that she made out the numbers on a piece of dusty glass which could be turned over and reversed!!!!
