Must have needed the money ??

My question is what are actors of the calibre of Phil Daniels and Julia Sawalha doing in this piece of crap ?

reply

They were partaking in one of the best and funniest sitcoms Britain has churned out in the new millenium.

I have to agree. It's inspired genius. I can't think of any other show that so blatantly and successfully established a string of catch phrases in such a short time.

reply

Well, that's a load of *beep*, isn't it? I like the show and all, but to say it's genius is just plain *beep* stupid.

I must agree that this show is quite genius (i don't mean that literally, but anyone who knows me will tell you that's my saying...that's not important i just didn't want you to get all confused, and take things at face value like 99% of the people on these boards do, which I must say I don't entirely blame them for as it's hard to get tone/sarcasm/whatever across on boards like this)

Anyway...what was I on aboyut...oh yes...I assume the reason the Phil Daniels and Julia Shwalaiallaiahaila (i dunno howe to spell her name) did this is probably the same reason that Frank Kelly played the part of Father Jack in Father Ted...admittedly I don't know what that is, or even if this is true...but it seems like a likely theory, no?

Vaya Con Dios!

I found this show very funny and extremely entertaining and can only suggest that it is taken in the same vein to which it is written and performed. Some great characters and classic comedy moments especially from Al Maurray, Phil Daniels and Rebecca Front. This is neither genius nor crap, but a great comedy IMHO

reply

It's basically Al's stand-up material, with a few token characters spouting cheesy catchphrases thrown in to give it some semblance of a 'plot'.
Watched the 1st six episodes on DVD, got exactly six laughs out of it.

Aaah, you humans...

See thats the problem with you young ones these days, you think your stupid girlie little Friends and Sex In The City is somehow comedy, and when real comedy strikes you in the face you *beep* bricks and 'dont get it'

ohhh, it's not funny, there not all these twats who never work but live in these big NY apartments.... bastards never pulled a pint in there lives.

reply

I'm not young, and I hate Friends and Sex In The City. I didn't like this because it just WASN'T FUNNY!
Al's comedy deserves a better vehicle.

You'll have to excuse me, I'm not from this planet.

reply

Friends was genius.

(Sorry for the delay replying to the thread. We were on a break.)

Anyone who thinks that this show is just Al Murray's stand up routine put into a sitcom has it backwards. Al Murray did perform the 'Pub Landlord' character in his stand up prior to this show airing, however the character was just one of many characters which he performed, and was not nearly as well rounded as it is now'.

The Pub Landlord character was adapted and developed for this show by Richard Herring and Al Murray, and only after the show aired did the Pub Landlord become Al Murray's bread and butter onstage persona.

It's almost a tragedy that such a large portion of Al Murray's audience miss the ironic parody and take the character at face value, and that the character has been such a runaway success. He used to do so many wonderful characters and impressions, I always thought that his impression of a Ford Sierra's boot lid opening and closing was better than his Pub Landlord character, but I suppose it's harder to build a commercially successful sitcom around a Ford Sierra's boot lid. Shame, I'd like to see that sitcom.

One word: Quality British Comedy!

I've just started watching this show, I never even knew Al had done this show until recently, and while there are a lot of good moments that remind me of Classics such as Bottom and The Young Ones, I really can't stand the catchphrases.

I'm only 4 epsidoes in and i'm sick to death of 'it's been a year...' and 'I was never confused'. They are really overused.

Also, the acting isn't so good, they all look like they are going to burst in to a fit of giggles at any moment and their dialogue is very self-knowing, making it obvious that they are acting - which isn't such a bad thing, but if Rik and Ade can pull off their stuff convincingly then there's no excuse really.

It was well paid work for them but the series was uneven.

Its that man again!!
