Arnold's asking Emmie to dance

At the dance, Arnold asks Emmie to dance, coming between her and the younger man (David?)

Why? Is it because he is a boss sexually harassing his female employee?

Or is it because he doesn't want to see a Jewish guy with a German girl?

Or?

It could also be a metaphor for asking her "Don't you want to ride my carousel?" and then the younger man comes between and says "No don't do that! He is manipulating you". A metaphor for what is happening in the office.

reply

It's because he wanted to dance. No ulterior motives.

His character was fun-loving and fed up with German formalities.

I think he was just trying to be social ... which gave the director the opportunity to show how much she and David were disliking the Arnold.
