Some personal readings

I am wondering if western audience have understood the implicity of the relationships between these 3 main roles. I guess some of these emotional elements are quite oriental.
First, Ying Er and Shao Dong, they were supposed to engage in an arranged marriage, but throughout years of letter contact, they became close friends. Once Shao Dong came back from US to China, they were supposed to get married. Throughout the first half of the movie, there relationship is more like a Brother-sister tie. Until Ying Er found the secret between Shao Dong and Lin Chong, she chose to support Shao Dong, and their relationship became sublimiated to the level of confidants, and they stayed like that throughout their whole life, even when Ying Er eventually went to US to stay with him.
Since Ying Er is only a supporting role, her affections towards Lin Chong was only revealed at her first encounter with him, and the night before Lin Chong escaped after killing his master, she hugged him deeply before he started his excile, the audience could eventually see that the one she loves is Lin Chong, which is deeply hidden throughout the storyline of the previous parts of the movie.
Over all, these three characters were undergoing a very confusing psychological process, especially Shao Dong. it is this confusion that makes this movie so special and fascinating . the narrative of the voiceover is extremely poetic, which structured this story very well. The music is also quite powerful and sensational
