Do you mean using "Brian" to monitor and report back to LE how David is doing within the LE? Or do you mean Brian's behavior within the LE being a reflection of Brian in real life, reflecting how Brian was gathering information for LE to assist with David's LE in the future?
I see this film as a morality play. A hi-tech fairy tale. So I resist the urge to dig too deep into isolated scenes or moments, or into characters and their motivations. I take the explanation at the end of the film at face value and roll with it. To address your question, sort of, I'll just say that the Brian we see in David's dream is an idealized Brian, as is Sofia, but not without merit. The LE tech support character told David what a good friend, true friend, Brian was as he hosted a memorial for David after his death. So the scene that you've referenced takes place within the LE and could just as easily represent David's dream starting to go "bad," the camera that Brian is using an ominous sign of David's distrust and paranoia about to set in as the LE fantasy unravels.
