Whats Burts job?

Where does he get all the money to pay for his stuff? He reminds me of Dale Gribble from King of the Hill.

reply

Yeah except we know that Dale is an exterminator - and besides that Nancy's really the one who pays the bills in the Gribble household. As I recall all Dale pays for is the cable.

There's got to be a bunch of ways Burt can make money buying and selling arms. Especially if he has eBay, lol. ;) But yeah, I don't think we're supposed to pay attention to the fact that they don't say what Burt actually does for a living. I know you know that, I'm just saying it. ;)

I was just curious how he paid for his 'toys'. They are expensive and it didnt make sense how he could afford them and I couldnt figure it out. In all the movies, he had brand new trucks. Movie 3 - two of them purchased quickly! But, after watching all the movies in the series, it does make sense. His ancestor owns a silver mine, and practically owns the town. This could be a reason for what help pay for his lifestyle in movie 1. As for the other movies, the government gave him his 'resources.' I wouldnt be surprised if he became assigned to protect the endangered white graboid in movie 3.

The only problem with your explanation is that in the first film, Burt describes why they are trapped - cliffs to the north, mountains to the east and west (or something). Anyway, he said that he PICKED this area because it was "geographical isolation" and his wife seemed to agree, like she helped pick the location too.

Still, this is only a small plot hole... I still like the silver mine theory best.

Some people have more than one property they own. My great grandparents own a few hundred acres on an island, and I would love to live there if my parents allowed me. My parents have some property in the country. But I live in the suburbs. Id like to live in an area like Perfection.

reply

Heather: Burt honey, where should we live?
Burt: Hmm, well we want geographic isolation... hey how about that place my great-grandparents lived in during the late 1800s? My parents told me about it - I think it's called Perfection.
Heather: That sounds great!

If anything, the Hiram Gummer connection might make it more likely Burt would settle somewhere the family has had a history with, as opposed to some other geographically isolated location.

I've always thought of Burt as somesort of a securtiy expert/consultant. Plus I bet he most likely did get payed well for his work in Mexico in Tremors 2 and Argentina in the opening sequence of Tremors 3.

Burt has probably got many promotions from killing the graboids. He inherited them all from his grandfather. Watch the 4th one and it shows Senior Gummer, how his grandfather started.

Considering Burt's knowledge of guns and how they work (as well as other military equipment and terminology) I always assumed that he had had some prior military experience. Probably just regular Army or Marines instead of intelligence though, since Burt has a resentment towards the government. If Burt had been in the military at some point, it could be he still advises or does work for them from time to time.

I do recall in an episode of the Tremors TV series on YouTube that Burt mentioned teaching at a college I think, so that would explain how he's so knowledgeable and being able to pay the bills. I also wouldn't put it past Burt to have even possibly written some books, since he mentions having studied the tactics from Little Bighorn and Field Marshall Rommel, so maybe he's a historian.

Then of course there's the connections to Tremors 4 where we find out that Burt's ancestor settled Perfection Valley. The silver mine was reopened and we see that Heiram Gummer wasn't obsessed with wealth anymore, so it wouldn't be inconceivable that his family has always put away money just to pay the bills. As for Burt Gummer picking Perfection because of its isolation, maybe that's where he in particular chose to build his bunker within Perfection.

Can't be too careful with all those weirdos running around.

I think in the first movie he had retired from some job, probably weapons or military related. He made money in the second movie from killing the graboids and shriekers which allowed him to build the graboid barrier in the 3rd movie and buy 2 trucks. His weapon collection increased in the second movie too as it seems the Mexican government allowed him to keep what weapons survived the explosion
