how can I get a copy?

I recently saw "The Poor & Hungry" on IFC (actually I missed the first 10 minutes or so), and it made a very strong impression on me. The intimate close-up warts-and-all photography was very personal, immediate, and strong. Black and white film was perfect for this bizarre walk through the lives of the gritty, low-life characters, whose naivite and deeply felt moral imperatives directed them relentlessly into walls and over cliffs as they navigated their grim and opportunistic environment. This film has guts, humor, violence, and beauty in unexpected places. It has stayed with me, has carved images in my mind, and I want so badly to own a copy, to see the beginning I missed, and to share it with friends. Where can I find it? Anyone?

I can't help you, but I just want you to know that I share your feelings for this film. It was amazing. I'm going to keep my eyes open for how to get a copy, and will let you know if I find out anything.

The night after the premier of Hustle and Flow here in Memphis (an invitation only event), The Poor and Hungry was screened at the wonderful Orphem Theatre here. In addition to Craig Brewer, Wanda Wilson and Eric Tate were present and stayed around after to answer all questions personally. Mr. Brewer hopes to have this released by Christmas. I hope so too - it will really blow people away!! By the way, I hope he is super successful - it couldn't happen to a nicer and more down to earth man!!

The Poor and the Hungry made me want to go slit my throat open in the damn movie theater. I scorn the people who gave Craig Brewer exorbitant amounts of money to create the Hustle and Flow. Which has already succeded in revolting me with it's plot alone.
Like the pimps in memphis need to be glorified any more than they already are.
I wonder how "blown away" the audience will be when they don't have the black and white shakey camera to distract them from a completely wretchid and (if experience teaches a viewer anything) poorly written/tied together plot.

Hustle and Flow doesn't glorify pimps and prostitution you idiot.

You know I read the thread this guy has on the Hustle and Flow Board and I can tell he is just as IGNORANT as he wants to be. First where were you when you saw The Poor and the Hungry in the Theater? Really?? and when because from what I recall H&F was the first movie Craig Brewer had that was a national release. And as for Hollywood throwing this kid a bunch of money... you are an idiot. John Singleton paid for Hustle out of his own pocket because none of the Hollywood Studios had the balls to pick up a movie about real life and pimps and such. This film premired at Sundance child. People don't release their stuff on Sundance because they like the press. They go to Sundance because they can't get National Distribution. Sundance is a movie festival for INDENPENDANTLY financed films. No big money being thrown at anyone. Hustle and Flow won not one but two awards at Sundance. Check out the past years of the festival and see what other films even came close to doing that. I can't stand people that are always playing the F*ing race card. You are pissed because a white boy came out and directed an excelent movie with only 4 weeks and very little money. Just because he wasn't black doesn't mean he wasn't there. And if it was a *beep* movie then why did Singleton pay the money to have it done? If it didn't potray the African American culture in the PC way of doing so, why would a black man put it on? Give it up Craig Brewer has a vision for turning reality into film.

I agree with you regarding the greatness of this film, but when, exactly, was the "race card" played?
