Great movie, but you know what I never understood?

If Mitch needed $500,000 to get Sonny's ransom and Ace obviously was concerned for Sonny (Unlike fake ass Rico), then why did he give him the coke keys to sell over a period of time? Why do a fundraiser?

How about "Hey Mitch, you're my best friend and since Sonny's my little man too, I'm going to give you these DIAMONDS to sell, so we can get the money right now!"

At the end when he says Lulu's diamonds bought him a new life, I always say to myself "Yeah well, Lulu's diamonds could have saved Sonny and Mitch's lives".

Just watched this last night and man you bring up a valid point. The only thing I can think of is that Ace probably felt that they were gonna kill Sonny anyway and that even though Mitch was his best friend, they were going in two different directions evident by that conversation they had on the couch when Ace was recovering. Mitch wanted to continue to hustle while Ace wanted to get out of the game.

Run Forrest Run!!! Oh Lord He's Gotta Gun!!!

I'm sure that in the movie sonny was killed because in real life, Rich Porter's(the guy who the character Mitch was based on)brother was killed by the kidnappers.

I think the reason why in real life Azie(Ace) didn't just give Rich 500 grand is because he didn't have money like that saved up. These guys made millions of dollars selling coke, but they also spent millions of dollars. They would buy so many cars, jewelry, and spend money partying that they wouldn't have a lot of money saved up. If they were smart they would have, but they were stupid with their money.

yea and a new life isnt 500,000 thousand the diamonds may have been enufffor azie to live a normal life

alpo killed rich in real life, he said he wasn't in on the kkidnapping, it was rich's uncle if i remember correctly?

reply

yes...alpo killed rich because he said rich owed him some money from a connect...it had nothing to do with the kidnapping of his li'l brother donnell...the movie was great, one of my favorite, but had quite a bit of fictional parts in it...it was more for entertainment, not a biography/autobiography...azie's story was not told as he origianl wrote it...read GAME OVER: THE RISE AND TRANSFORMATION OF A HARLEM HUSTLER, by azie faison...one of my favorite books...big azie faison fan

Its not that simple when dealing with gangsters/kidnappers of that caliber. There's no telling how long it would've taken Mitch to sell those diamonds. Their time was limited, he didnt have that long. Its not common that you can just go outside and sell 500,0000 worth of diamonds. Who has that kind of money just lying around? Plus, those kidnappers deal in cold hard cash, cash is what they demanded. They were not about to dilly dalley around trying to sell diamonds. Cash!!! Is what they wanted.

The real life situation was actually different. In the movie, LuLu is killed pretty early on but in the book, Azie explains that he was still around after the shooting and was talking about getting out of the game as well but got killed right after that. In real life, Azie didn't have the money like that and neither did Rich.

Its a good question but I think as other people mentioned - Ace was done and though he felt for Mitch he wasnt going to get involved in his problems and gave him his drugs to officially retire from the game.

Ace probably would never have guessed Mitch would be double crossed and even still it was probably way too late for Sonny.

Even if Ace had the money, the kidnappers (Ice, etc.) may still have wasted Mitch and Sonny then kept the Money.
