Young Johnny Blaze does not equal Older Johnny Blaze

I am a fan of this movie but I hate seeing the young Johnny Blaze because he is obviously not the same person as the older one. The older one cracks jokes, likes the Carpenters, jellybeans, reads, has a bad toupee, etc...the younger one does not want to ride anymore, etc...

That is a point. I tend to think of it that in his adult life he needs to constantly distract himself from his fear and sense of loss. I realize that takes me reading into it, though.

Johnny Blaze grew up. It's that simple. You are also making assumptions that Johnny didn't read, or crack jokes, ect. when he was younger.

He was forever changed by a horribly traumatic incident. That he would have been exactly the same after that would have been unrealistic...

Just started a thread saying how much I enjoyed the first 15 minutes of the film (hadn't spotted this one). In my opinion Matt Long's portrayal in the setup of the film worked really well. If they had kept a similar tone throughout I think it would have been a much better film - even with a switchover to Cage.

I stopped worrying about things like this when I saw an umpteenth viewing of "Stand By Me". It bothered me for years that Will Wheaton grew up to look like Richard Dreyfuss.

I figured Time was rough on Johnny lol that's why he grew up to look like Cage
