I love this movie - why all the negative reviews?

Yeah it's a feel-good ending but so what? I think it's brilliant (even though I can't stand Kevin Costner). What's with all the hate?

I have no idea why this movie wasn't well recieved. I really liked it. It was very touching and just a bit creep in a good way.

It seems popular to hate Costner for whatever reason.

I like Kevin Costner...especially in 'Open Range'...
I don't know why people hate him. He developes things that are interesting to him and I really admire that because it is satisfying to finish something that you created, whether anyone else likes the finished product or not.

I agree. I loved the movie. It was a real suprise, probably because I was not really expecting much. Not sure why it rates so low, I mean 5.8....come on! I rate it a least a high 7 if not a low 8.

The themes of the movie are right up my alley (it's what I read about and write about), and I normally love to give props to any story or movie that attempts to address themes of an afterlife and its implications. However, this was a dreadfully written screenplay, full of utterly trite, predictable and cliched dialogue and situations. And it was horribly acted. The whole production, unfortunately, was godawfully lame and ended up being more amusing (in the bad way) than compelling or impactful.

I thought it was really good...until the ending...

...when it became GREAT!

i love this movie too. i espicially liked how kevin wasn't jack bauer-like and could jump off a cliff and live. it's a sweet movie and i don't know why ppl hate that in a movie. for pete's sake, there's millions of horrible movies out there. if ppl want a different ending, watch a different movie. the end.

Costner was fine, quite good in fact, but the screenplay dragged. 90% of it was the usual ghost story stuff of bumps in the night and cryptic messages from beyond the grave, while the sceptical hero is scratching his head and wondering if there might be something supernatural going on. Of course there is, you idiot, that's what we paid to see! I only recall one genuinely creepy scene which was the fat guy's corpse in the hospital speaking to Costner.

I didn't mind it at the time I watched it. I thought it had an interesting enough premise and took it to a satisfying place in such a way I never felt bored. Costner, while not necessarily a "great" actor, has always known what he's doing with roles like this. Having lost my first wife a few years ago, not sure how it would make me feel now though.
