what was on the floor in the solarium?

I've rewound this scene a zillion times and I am still baffled by it. When Bollinger first enters the house and looking around for Sukeena, he goes into the solarium becoming more and more uneasy. He sees something on the floor that startles him and he says "screw this" and goes to leave finding the door locked. What does he see? the color suggests it's Sukeena's scarf with bugs crawling on it but why did this frighten him so much? The only answer I've come up with is he was nervous about the professor's plan from the beginning so after losing her, seeing her (scarf?) in that condition was the last straw? What do you think?
