There are many stories about the Winchester House that stands in San Jose and is one of the famous tourist attractions in the Bay area. I've been there twice. First time I thought I felt some energies but nothing the 2nd time.
Interestingly, now they have banned cameras inside the house. The tour guide told us to put cameras away before starting with it. When I went in Dec. 2008, I took a lot of pics. I wonder what made them ban the cameras...

reply

Something as simple as a camera flash can damage paint and such just from the light, especially if there are thousands of people taking photos a year.
They might have not appreciated people maybe taking photos and faking ghost sightings.

Or it could be as simple as its out of respect for the family. I know here in Australia there are a lot of places you can't take photo's just for cultural and spiritual beliefs.

I live in San Jose & saw the Winchester Mystery House when I was about 10...funny, its a local landmark yet no one really talks about it here, it's not very famous to us locals!

reply

Yeah, its funny like that rckland. Local's rarely give a hoot about tourists attractions in their area and stuff like that, don't know why, I guess its just not as exciting as when you are actually the tourist going to the area to specifically visit a site.

reply

Yes it is famous, even to the locals. Working in Silicon Valley, every one I worked with at NeXT or Apple and more traveled to see the Winchester House.

You might not want to see it on a yearly trip, unless of course you have new folks you can bring along, but its a fun visit. The back story is what adds to the true depth of intrigue that the famous creator of the Winchester Rifle's wife did with his fortune.

reply

I believe they allow foreigners inside. ; )

reply

I went once and won't go again. It's boring.

Yeah this house looks awesome..Was just wondering what does it look like inside....I hope I'll be able to go there one day...Unfortunately I live in Europe.

The Rose Red production crew toured the Winchester House, yet found the rooms were just too small to be used with the actors, equipment..etc...

So they went with the small castle in Washington State instead. I think it was a good choice.

Also, the "Ghosthunters" show..TAPS crew did a paranormal investigation at the Winchester House..and got nothing at all. No ghosts!

reply

Absolutely true!Rose Red was shot in Thornewood Castle, which is much gorgeous to me than the Winchester House. And besides,Thornewood Castle is really haunted!Just see what the president of Washington State Ghost Society says:
"Thornewood Castle is the most magical of places I have visited. ...it has an extremely high degree of energy and that energy is healing. ... Thornewood seems to be in a special spatial displacement of time... It has all the features conducive to what people consider a haunting to incorporate. ... Without a doubt, it is the most uniquely haunted location I have ever visited."

Yes and everyone should have a look on the pictures of this castle, look at the First Floor Interior pictures, the Great Hall looks just like in Rose Red!This is an amazing place, isn't it?

reply

I was there 400 years ago and it was a dump. I went back 3 months ago and it is still a dump. If you go again you will see all the smoke and mirrors and more info than the last guy.

Nothing is more beautiful than nothing.

Too bad I didn't get to see the castle when I was in Seattle for a week. I'm relieved to know it's not in downtown Seattle, as portrayed in the movie. I would have felt very stupid not seeing it.

reply

Hey, yeah would have been such a shame if it was in downtown Seattle and you didn't see it!)) In their web site it says it's a short drive from Seattle and Tacoma...
I hope I get the chance to visit it soon.

reply

When I have enough money, I am definately travelling to Seattle to check out the filimg locations, but that might be a fair time away considering how expensive travel is, and now that there is a recession =(

reply

Yeah Alicia, I know what you mean...It's gonna take some time before I get the chance to go to Washington State, too..

Hasn't anyone here been to the Winchester Mystery House? I live in New York, but it was one of the first sites I saw when I first visited San Francisco, CA. It is the most amazing house! Apparently, the original owners widow believed that if she continuously added to the house, she would be safe from harm. It has some of the most amazing architectural designs ever made (staircases to nowhere, etc.). Here's the link to the website. Check it out!

I saw it about 10 years ago. As a kid I'd seen an episode of "Ripley's Believe it or Not," and was fascinated with it. I then read a book as an adult called "Vanishing Point" which was located in and around the House. My husband and I then went out to California on business and that was one of our site trips. It was neat to see something I'd only read about.

Did you also check out the Century Dome theaters next door, which also featured in the book? Apparently they've been torn down now, but they were pretty cool. (I saw one of the Star Wars "Special Edition" films in one of 'em.)

(The house also figures in Tim Powers's Earthquake Weather, another excellent read.)

I took my son to the Winchester House a few years ago. For the most part, it was just a large Victorian mansion with a few bizarre architectural features; I was a little disappointed. Mrs. Winchester apparently was afraid of being haunted by the ghosts of people killed by the rifle her husband had developed, so taking the advice of some medium, she kept the house under construction. I never figured out how that was supposed to keep the ghosts away. She was definitely eccentric (i.e., a rich nut). Poor people are just nuts - they don't get to be eccentric.

If you want to see a much more interesting and imposing estate on the West Coast, try the Hearst Castle at San Simeon. It, too, was under construction almost until Hearst's death (it is still unfinished), but that was to avoid the property tax which only applied to completed structures.

We've been to both Winchester House and Hearst Castle, both very interesting and beautiful, both very different. The Winchester house is a very large Victorian house with stairs that lead to the ceiling and doorways that open to other rooms or walls. There were some great aspects about the widow and how she put in special irrigation systems into the green rooms to recycle water and other such things that were way before her time.

She had Tiffany glass windows that were spectacular. She had a whole room of them. And it was fun to see how many times the #13 was hidden in the house. One window was a spiderweb and it had 13 something, I don't recall, I think squares?

Hearst castle was very rich with the 2 pools being the best features in my opinion. There is a dining hall with flags, and he bought so many artifacts from the war because Europe was having hard times and he got many items at a bargin. He built entire rooms around these artifacts, like an ornate ceiling, and a different room with a giant fireplace, so big a man can stand up underneath it.

I recognized a few similarities between the story of the Winchester house, such as the fortune teller who told her she would live as long as the house was being built. One of the last scenes where the "writing psychic" was running around upstairs looked a lot like part of the Winchester house because of the small spaces and beadboard walls.

If you ever get a chance, both are well worth a visit.

Wow, after reading the is is makes me what to so much more.
I would love to see that house for real... Winchester Mansion here I come (I wish)=P

I took my family there on the way to San Francisco. Its actually a pretty small house. It's an interesting house, but if you ever go don't expect a lot.
