This game was like a drug without the side effects
Probably not the best thing to be doing with your life. Warcraft 1 was pale in comparison to Warcraft 2. I could remember being awake beyond 24 hours straight constantly playing this game. I think the most was around 36 hours before I had to hit the sack. The first version I played was the DOS version for the IBM PC. Later, when I got bored of stomping the A.I., I'd play at my cousin's house for a little competition. Eventually, the Internet became very popular around 1995. A program called Kali allowed people to play IPX-protocol driven network games online instead of over a real network. This allowed people to play all over the world for a lifetime subscription price of only $20. This handy little program led me to an unending addiction to constantly play people over a slow 56 Kilobit Dial up connection. This addiction was so bad that when I was living with my girlfriend at the time, that she got jealous that her computer was getting more attention than she was. Of course she'd try all sorts of tactics to pry me away. One time she even sat on my lap facing me blocking my view of the computer screen. Anyhow... let's just say a few times she got me off the damn computer but BEWARNED. This game eventually got a new Windows release version that allowed you to play on Battle NET. This allowed even more people to play this game online for free. If there was ever a game took more of my time online it would have to be this one.
If you're curious as to what game really was the predecessor to the success of Warcraft 2, look for the game called Dune 2: Battle for Arrakis.
