The ending *Spoilers*

When they cross over that barbed wire, does that mean they made it into Iraq? I wasn't sure if that meant that they crossed a huge hurdle by avoiding getting ambushed or if it meant they just crossed into a more dangerous situation.

Please don't read this message if you don't want to know the ending.

I would like to think that Ayoub and Madi made it safely into Iraq & that Madi had a successful operation. However, I don't think that's what the storyteller was saying. The young sister narrating the movie is telling things the way she wanted them to end. I think that with his youth, Ayoub chose to stay with his mule instead of running when he had the chance. I think he and Madi were killed.
The young sister tells the story as if the mule suddenly got up and was able to trot off with her brothers. Unfortunately, as the title implies, I don't think that was the case.

This was a powerful, terrific movie. All children worldwide deserve to have a happy, safe & loving childhood. My heart went out to the children in this movie. I hope that it helps promote better conditions for Kurdish children and all children throughout the world.

Uhh, they made it clear that even if he did have the operation he wouldn't live longer than eight or ten months.

Hear, hear! The 5 siblings and their relationships were shown with such tenderness. It is heartbreaking to think of the many children the world over who live in desperate circumstances seeking to rely on their naive youth. One has to admire them as much as one wishes better for them.
