who REALLY killed tommy's mom? tommy or his dad?

tommy at the end of the movie told that when his dad found out that his mom is having sex with him, his dad beat his mom to death.

but at the last visit of andy garcia to tommy's dad in prison, tommy's dad said ''it was tommy''. and some posters here on said that tommy killed his mom because he could no longer stand the abuse.

and after tommy's dad said ''it was tommy'' andy garcia became very alarmed and told his therapist friend to not let tommy get out of the all boy facility and that he should stay there. and andy garcia strictly told shelley and her mom to not let shelly get out of the house much more with tommy. and if tommy did not kill his mother, why would he want so bad to get out of the all boy facility and even kill his own therapist inside the therapist's own home? and why would he want so bad to get out of the facility if he did not kill his own mom? and andy garcia shouted that tommy is dangerous!!!!!

so who really killed tommy's mom? tommy or tommy's dad?

I think you're right. I just watched this and had been questioning "dad" having committed the murder. Tommy's acting out/murderous behavior in conjunction with his dad's protective mannerisms/yet purposeful aloofness towards him lend credence to the idea that Tommy did it. Most importantly, Tommy acted/reacted violently EVERY TIME he was touched by a female.

I still believe that it was his dad that killed his mom.

The "It was Tommy" part was referring to the fact that it was Tommy in bed with his wife instead of the "half naked idiot" that he saw running in the back lawn.

That is just my opinion though.

You are right catchreb, it was tommy´s dad. Remember the part when Michael meets with Tommy´s dad and tells him something like "the only thing that separates us is dumb *beep* luck"?. That is because Michael did not kill the psycologist who was molesting his son, but Tommy´s dad DID kill his mom.

Bacardi, you are right about Joseph killing his wife, but your argument is wrong.

When Michael says that the act of killing separates them he still didn't know the truth, the "It was Tommy" sentence was said after Michael's confession.

And yes, "It was Tommy" refers to Diane's sex partner and not the killer. After all, Tommy was too young and not strong enough to kill an adult woman without any weapons (she was killed just by force of hands).

However, knowing the consequences such an experience can induce in a boy, Michael knows that Tommy is unpredictable and potentially dangerous. Also, he knows that Tommy has shown his violence (Troy has reported the injury) and though having no evidence he can connect Tommy with Chloe's death. That is why he wants to protect his daughter (but he almost fails because, as it usually happens, his ex-wife believes that he is only trying to intrude their lives).

Wow. I just happened to logon on and see the last few posts after mine. I can't believe 2+ years later, I need to go back and watch this film! I knew it was deep, but not Jacques Cousteau deep. All, thanks for your previous comments and insight.

Yeah, you´re right. I cannot believe that after so long people have still replied on this thread. I think this movie was awesome.
