How did Andy know...

...that his son was being abused by his therapist? And why did he go back to the prison to tell all of this to the father, other than as a really convenient plot device?

In the scene where he visits Tommy's father in the prison he says that he found a letter that his son had left behind explaining all of the abuse. This film preys on your feelings and is very manipulative. I personally don't care for it, more of a "hero" role for the extremely egotistical Garcia. I can only imagine that the writers thought it would be "cute" to have Garcia admit his situation to Tommy's father so that he would come clean about Tommy & his mother, extremely manipulative, and very far fetched.
