I got the impression that they did have HIV since they became the faces on the "Living with HIV" posters in the end. I think it was meant to show how love overcomes all tragedy and that HIV is not necessarily a death sentence. The ending was quite depressing!

I wouldn't call the ending depressing but it was sobering. It also mirrored what happens in real life. Life is not all roses and peppermint candy. I can imagine that these are the emotions that run through someone's head when they find out they may be infected. I thought the ending was bittersweet. Typical "art-imitating-life"-type of movie, which is usually my favorite. At least, the couple got married and lived happily together, albiet with HIV.

I think the main message of the movie was to let people know that this disease is still out there and for everyone to protect themselves. Also for those that have HIV, that this is not a death sentence if they can change their lifestyle and follow their doctor's orders. I think if this had been done as a big budget Hollywood movie, the couple would have tested negative and the real message might have been lost.

I agree with your take of the ending. Over the years Hollywood has created it's own versions of reality...Sad to say I think more people believe in that version than the real one.
