this may be a dumb question? (spoilers)
but...who killed the monk? was it de guise? this was just one part of the stroy i didn't grasp.

The film doesn't say who killed the monk, but the supposition is that it was De Guise, who killed the monk, to keep the monk from telling what he knew about the crimes of De Guise, as the monk was apparently an accessory to those crimes.
