In the Name of the Rose is really good.

I was thinking about the Name of the Rose myself, but also Flesh and Blood, the Verhoeven movie.

Name of the Rose
The Return of Martin Guerre (if you don't mind subtitles)
any of the Cadfael mysteries

I saw Queen Margot in my Renaissance and Reformation class... a bit later in period than medieval, but no fantasy!

Oh, you might want to check out "Anchoress." http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0106271/

set around 1329, all in black and white with virtually no sound track. It can best be described as "inspired art house," or "Bad like a train wreck," I would describe it as both, and I feel equally compelled to watch it for both reasons. Somehow, it works without quite making sense to me. It's also all about women's roles, and a little dark.

Arguably, you might fit "Timeline" in there, but that depends on how you view time travel. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0300556/

Another possibility is Anzapta. I haven't seen it, and I don't think it's out on DVD or video in the US though. I wish it were, I hear it's pretty gritty. know anybody in the DVD making industry? http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0284851/

I really recommend Luther. I'm sure you can find more info on imdb, but it's about Martin Luther's confrontation towards the Catholic church, and his internal turmoil that comes before and after the main event. I am a fan of Medieval movies that don't depict their characters as complete idiots, or their surroundings as all brutal and simple. It takes place when he's fairly young, so around the late 15th or 16th century. It's a bit later than the other movies suggested, but I think you'd enjoy it.

There are no happy endings because nothing ends.

The Brotherhood of the Wolf. French Film. Excellent.

reply

...it isn't set in medieval times and it most definitely contains fantasy elements.

***SPOILERS***

Brotherhood of the Wolf didn't have 'fantasy elements'. You're just meant to think that at the begining (a bit like in the Hound of the Baskervilles). The beast was actually a big cat that de Morangias had brought back from his travels, tormented, strappen into armour and trainied to obey his whistle. (Come to think of it though you could argue that a Kung Fu fighting Native American is pretty fantastic).

***END SPOILERS***

You're right about it not being set in medieval times though. It's actually set in the C18th.

I'd say this film reminds me of Ingemar Bergman's The seventh seal. At first I thought it was some kind of remake but they have nothing on common except for the group of actors and how the director chose to describe the medieval atmosphere.
