terminally flawed costume drama.

We begin with being informed that "Norman Lords rule the land" - not so.

By 1154, and the ascension of Hnery II begins the Angevin, or Plantagent, ascension of England. This is no quibble, but need not concern us beyond the establishment of the error of historical facts which so infest the entire presentation.

Herewithout, however, is such a parade of "quibbles" that bring the whole down forthwith, and completely.

I think, that had the play been set in some other era, either earlier, or perhaps later, (even much later, say, France in the late eighteenth century, it might have been easier to lay the historical precedents and antecedents aside.

It resolves itself to a mystery play without much mystery, and sets itself up to stand on the merit of the beautiful soundtrack and some rather slick cinematography.

All the actors are wasted with the slendor dialogue and almost completely redundant storyline.

What we are left with is a procession of intriguing visuals and throwaway performances.

it was described as a thriller, and I found it annoyingly dull, predictable, and wondering why such good actors were doing this movie. Not mysterious. I do not know much about English History, and what I do know is mixed up with film history. I dislike it when I'm fed misinformation. Ah well. It could have been a worse movie.

Yeah, I'm definitely not sure about the "thriller" aspect of it (somehow I don't usually think of the words "thriller" and "dull" in the same sentence, but this movie seems to be one of those times), but nor am I too sure about the "documentary" aspect the other poster seems to think is absolutely necessary in order to validate itself. He must have a ball at at King Arthur movies... or Star Wars. He suggests other options, I suggest the easiest one to satisfy him probably would've bee to simply leave out the line he references to base the entire complaint on. It's just a movie fer chrissakes.

Indeed, there are a lot of problems with this film.

But despite everything this movie does wrong, and lacks, I somehow find myself drawn to watch it over and over again.

I totally enjoyed it. Great cast. Liked it so much I bought the book and DVD.
