Margate

This film was actually shot in Margate on the Kent coast.

I grew up in a similar but rather less salubrious resort futher up the same coast. We used to be taken to the Dreamland amusement park in Margate for a treat!

For the record, the film does not paint an entirely accurate picture of the UK asylum system, which is in some ways less bad and in others worse. Although asylum seekers are indeed dispersed throughout the country, levels of surveillance are not as high as suggested here, and many people return to major cities where they have friends. Coercion to stay where you're put is more down to the availablity of state financial support. On the other hand, many asylum seekers are literally locked up in detention centres.

The film also declines to show the extreme prejudice against asylum seekers from many in the UK, particularly in rural areas.

In fact the British are probably not the most racist nation in Europe (the Swiss for example have just voted to exclude third generation immigrants from citizenship) but there is little to be proud of in our treatment of people who are genuinely seeking refuge.
