Which Mercenary is the best?

Is it the act 1,2,3, or 5?

It just depends on your class, build, and style. Also, be advised that the Act 2 mercenaries in normal arent the same as the Act 2 mercenaries in nightmare or hell. I usually find myself liking the Act 2 ones best.

I find it best to keep the first rogue you get and build her up,

my rogue is the same level as my character (sometimes lower), and when I fight a boss she can easily kill the minions in under 30 seconds, also useful for taking care of little annoying bad guys, like fallen or flayers,

How come whenever I talk about belief you always assume I'm talking about God?

I prefer the act 2 mercenary. It has a lot of hitpoints which is very useful against top bosses, he can deliver a lot of damage with the spear, and it has the aura.. i usually prefer offensive aura like might or blessed aim because it will help a lot your character as well.
