on Michelle? I was reading an interview with the director, where Michelle's character was described as "so mean and horrible". I know she was selfish at times, but I found that description of her to be kind of harsh. She was wrong to have the affair, but she found out her husband and best friend were both betraying her. I was wondering what some others thought of her character and why?

Michelle wasn't exactly mean, but she wasn't nice either. She had a lot to be angry about. She was trying to sell her art, her husband didn't seem to be attracted to her, and it just seemed as if the world was getting her way. The relationship with Annie bothered me a bit. For the most part, I actually liked Michelle. She had a f*uck off attiude, what's so bad about that?

reply

I liked her better at the end of the movie than at the beginning. She seemed like a bitch at first but like the previous poster said, she had a lot to be angry about. Her husband was sort of an ass hole (I didn't even know he was screwing around--I missed that). He seemed obtuse. He didn't have much understanding. I think many women can relate to Michelle--the ones who've lost their illusions and are having trouble finding new meaning in their lives. She's an honest portrayal of many average women which is something you don't find very often in movies.

I thought she was self-absorbed and selfish. We don't know how long her husband had been having the affair, but I'm sure her bitchy behaviour came first.

Thanks for the opinions!

On the first half of the movie, she was portrait as a horrible person.
Didn't care about her mother, or her little sister, or anyone.
A 32 years old woman who spends her daytime watching cartoons, instead of playing or talking with her own daughter.
Has a stupid and pretentious *beep* you attitude. Not i have anything against the attitude, but she didn't have anything to stand that attitude for. She behaves like a 15 years old kid, who can afford to tell *beep* off to the world, cos their parents are going to keep paying the bills anyway.

On the second half, we see some changes, and the fact that she knew about her cheating husband can make us understand why she has that much angry and sadness.

But overall, i think even if your husband/wife is cheating on you, it doesn't give you the right to act like Michelle does.

she was mean, but she was also the only few realistic characters in the film. her, gyllenhaal and the fat adopted kid were the only characters that kept me watching. still, after half an hour i couldn't take being beaten over the head with the film's painfully obvious agenda

I thought she was pretty harsh. She was pretty unaware of other people, and I felt she valued those chairs more than people.

IDK, maybe it was the way that she talked about her adopted sister and mother to her "best-friend" as if she was reviewing a book or movie. "She's just after attention." I felt like I knew her or someone like her and was immediately turned off. Kudos to KK for her performance, but if this had been a Mike Leigh film, she would have been the least sympathetic character ever.

And just because someone's husband is having an affair doesn't excuse their poor behavior. If anything, it serves in piecing together the story behind the affair.

What was the agenda? I guess it wasn't obvious to me.

She refused to get a job as an adult so she could make whatever art she wanted to. She had no responsibility or accountability...no wonder her husband cheated on her.

And yeah, she was pretty mean too...telling her sister she should be eating stuff...
