why didn't they open the door

when the gas was coming in...

I've never really thought about that. I think it depends where about in the house the baddies were, I can't really remember but if they were on the higher floors there was a chance they could hear the door opening. There were a few things that bothered me about this film. If your daughter is so ill then why not have a insulin kit in the panic room, I know they had only moved in that day but I would have thought it would be an important thing to do.

they were all downstairs, and the mom and daughter were watching them on the monitors too to know where they were. i think they should have had insulin kit too but i think thats a pretty understandable thing not to have since jodie foster hadnt even finished setting up the panic room before she went to bed.

I thought it was odd the panic room had fireblankets but no ventalation or air purification system. Or oxygen mask. Or even a gas mask!

reply

The burglars were right outside, they couldn't open the door.

The ventilation system being so easy to access and tamper with was retarded. What use is a panic room if it has such glaring flaws. So many times this movie defied basic common sense imo.

Remember that it was meant to be a temporary place to hide while you contact the authorities via the telephone inside. It wasn't meant to withstand an extended siege where the bad guys had a chance to tear down walls and have time to plan. It also would have been perfectly fine as a place to hide as home invaders just took your stuff (the vast majority of home invasions are people looking to steal things, not hurt people) and then left. It was just unfortunate for them that their panic room just happened to have the 20 million the bad guys were looking for.

The panic room was not finished?

The bad guys were all in the master bedroom which contained the panic room. Had they opened the door, they would have had nowhere to go. The wall which Forest Whitaker smashes to expose the pipes is the same wall with the panic room door on it, as you can see the broken mirror which Jared Leto had previously broken in frustration when they had first escaped him and been able to lock themselves in the panic room.

reply

Because the bad guys were right at the door. They'd have been instantly caught.

The villians were upstairs on another floor. They LOWERED the gas hose into the panic room. Jodie reached upward tovhokd the firestick and ignite the gas. Two different floors. Jodie could have briefly ventilated the room.

I just watched it, it's in the same room. You can even see the black mark when the gas is ignited in later scenes when the door is opened. So yeah, they would have been caught.
