I think they mean otaku. Most gaijin with an interest in Japanese pop culture should know that word.
I don't quite understand why ordinary Japanese people seem so uncomfortable with the otaku subculture. Maid cafes and robot catgirl porno DVDs aren't all that weird, are they?
