Boys Don't Cry was Nebraska, not Wyoming.

I wouldn't say it's any less safe to be homosexual in WY. There's bigots everywhere, it just depends on having the luck to avoid 'em.

You echoed my sentiments regarding this question...the safety of homosexuals has nothing to do with geography...gay bashers are everywhere.

that's true, but i see what she's saying. the boy who found matthew said something like, he'd never seen a homosexual before, and the whole town had a "live & let live", "don't ask don't tell" vibe. i live in illinois, and two of my best friends are gay, and my school has a gay-straight alliance and openly identifies as a "safe space". we certainly have haters here, as any town would, but the issue homosexuality seems to be much more out in the open, as compared to the attitudes of some of the people portrayed in the film anyway.

I live in Cheyenne, Wyoming. It's safe to be gay in Wyoming. There are tons of out gay males and females here and I even know a trans gender person. Cheyenne has over 50,000 people so obviously there is going to be diversity here.

I agree. I live in Powell, Wyoming with a little over 5,000 people and being gay is accepted here. We have a number of homosexuals in town and in the surrounding areas, and there have been no occurrences of gay bashing and people don't get treated any differently because of their sexual orientation. I'm not saying there aren't homophobes here, but that's the same for every place. As some of the above posts said, there are people who accept it and people who don't in all corners of the globe. It's no different here in Wyoming, no matter what the movie led you to believe.

There are probably certain towns or cities in WY where being gay is frowned upon and coming out would be risky, but there are places like that everywhere, even in states that consider themselves liberal.

To ask if it's safe to be gay in Wyoming is like asking is it safe to be an 18 year old blond girl in Aruba. Bad things can happen, but one incident doesn't define how a certain location really is!

I went to the University of Wyoming for five years, and since this incident Laramie has became a sort of safehaven for homosexuals in the area. The town is made up of about half college kids who are all fairly socially liberal and I think it is the safest place from prejudice in the sparsely populated state. However, rumors are in the town, that there is more to the story than just a "hate crime" I heard debts for drugs were involved as well.

Wyoming is safer for gays than the rest of Red State America. The National gay rights movement chose to make this a national story.
