The silliest (spoilers...somewhat)

The silliest scene in this mostly pretty decent thriller is the one with the menacing 4x4 which sprays oil on the car the heroes are in. If the oil attack was supposed to kill Claire & Charlie to prevent them from stumbling on what was really going on, then why didn't they just shoot them? You might think the reason is that the oil-hose would cause their car to lose control, thus making it look like an accident. However, if their car, along with the whole street, was covered in oil, then it clearly wouldn't look like an accident, it would look like sabotage. If it wasn't going to matter about the oil everywhere, say because the military thought there'd be enough time to clean the oil from the car & street, then why not, for instance, shoot out the tires of their car, causing them to crash, then replace their tires for non-shot-out ones? The tire replacement would take less time than the oil cleanup, & the tire shoot-out would guarantee a crash more-so than the oil technique.
And if they're not cleaning up the oil, then what about the subsequent potential crashes when innocent motorists drive that road? Those motorists are, if anything, more at risk, since Claire knew she was having oil spewed at her; the next motorists to drive that road wouldn't. And say they are sinister enough to consider those potential accidents an acceptable sacrifice, won't they be investigated? When they are, won't people investigate the source of the mystery oil spill? If "unexplained oil spill" is considered an unsuspicious diagnosis in this town, that people won't push, then what's wrong with dispatching Claire & Charlie via "unexplained bullet discharge"?
And another thing, when Charlie shouts out "It's oil!" why doesn't Claire just slow the car to a gentle stop? There's no need for her to do what she does, which is keep pace with the 4x4 for some seconds before braking really suddenly & causing a crash. If the idea is that slowing the car to a gentle stop would leave her vulnerable to the guys from the 4x4 who might then, say, shoot her, then why didn't they do that? Why didn't they do anything to her or Charlie while they were unconscious, after their car actually did crash and they were totally helpless, to boot?
Plus, hey. The military personnel I know wouldn't forgive me if I didn't include a quip about the military's budget: they *wish* they had the budget to waste money spraying streets with oil of all things. Water, especially soapy water, would have made way more sense and would have left NO leads, no suspicious evidence, to those investigating the car crash.
This scene is followed by a scene of Claire waking up in hospital & talking about a nightmare. I honestly spent most of that scene trying to work out whether the oil-hose scene was supposed to have been her nightmare, because if it had been it would explain so much.
