Why didn't they just leave him alone?

He had been out of the limelight for years, and they obviously didn't want to have their little secret exposed, so why not just leave him be?

Big problem with your idea. There would not have been a story if they had left him alone and he would have never gotten his just desserts in the end.

reply

Well yeah that goes without saying, but my point was that they didn't need to find him and prosecute him for a crime that was over a decade old. Not only that, but they should have known his wife was a hot shot lawyer.

Actually you raise a good point. Why after 14 years does military intelligence want to bring charges against him, given his circumstances and the fact that his unit had a murky background? Possibly the book elaborates on this point. May be it was pressure from the wife of Tom's last victim.

reply

They had no idea where he was till the house was broken into & they found his fingerprints.

EXACTLY!! You could see Tom's whole demeanor and personality change when he noted that Claire had called police the night of the break-in to their home.

Even just before they were arrested on the street, he went on high alert at the sight of the arguing couple across the street from their car and even more suspicious when he noted the van parked in front of their car.

I do agree with the OP, why in the heck would the military want a trial of Tom's murder of villagers at the village when the reason they were sent to the village in the first place was to cover up the cafe bombing screw up by Hernandez!?

It is very likely they didn't know he was married to a high powered attorney; they didn't even know where he was or under what name he was living until the investigation of the break-in pulled his prints which he knew were on file with the military.
