Great movie for what it is... lighten up.

My fiance and I saw this in the theater. Now I have the DVD. We both have a wonderful, perverse love affair with bad movies. That's what we went to see: a bad movie. When the movie poster features a smiling kangaroo wearing sunglasses and a satin jacket, don't expect to see a sweeping epic. Stop criticizing the movie for not being something it was never meant to be. I'm a film geek myself, but for God's sake, not every movie needs to be Ben-Hur or Braveheart. Pull the stick from your nether regions and relax. Stupid movies are awesome.

I agree. Well great might be a stretch but I did like it. I think the main reason for that was that I had extremely low expectations for it. I wouldn't even go see it with my friends when they suggested it, for some reason I was thinking the whole thing was about a talking kangaroo or something. So there wasn't really any way it could have been as bad as I was expecting so I was somewhat pleasantly surprised and I got a few laughs out of it, good enough.

Contrary to popular belief, I do not suffer from insanity. I enjoy every minute of it.

reply

Agreed. I don't see why it got such a bad rap. The average age it was probably aimed at was 12, not 32.

reply

You people don't get it. I understand that you have a perverse love affair with bad movies, and in some cases i do too. But just because it was aimed at a younger audience does not validate the fact that it is a complete piece of junk. That is part of the problem with all the big budget junk that is thrown in our face constantly. It has lowered the standards of what is acceptable to waste our money on. Kids are not stupid. They enjoy a movie with substance just like any adult would. Stop being so forgiving to these studios that are willing to spend sixty million on pieces of s**t like this, and refuse to spend your money on them. I can't believe anyone would make a ridiculous argument like, "well, it was meant for kids". SHUTUP!

reply

I don't see why this movie got such low ratings, i'll admit it's not HILARIOUS like some comedy flicks I know but even if you don't laugh throughout the movie it's still an enjoyable film.

and by my opinion, this movie kicked gigli's ass

& so did dumb & dumberer, which wasn't that good

I don't at all agree that this is a bad film, a piece of junk, or a film without substance however.

And a big part of the substance of a film is the craftiness of the filmmaking. This has that in spades.

reply

So if you and a bunch of sick friends got to see this snuff film that was considered the elite in snuff films, and it does what it sets out to do, does that mean it's suddenly a great movie?

Braveheart sucked.

And your argument makes no sense. In a nutshell, this is what you're all saying: "I don't know why people say this movie is bad. This movie was never meant to be good in the first place, and since it wasn't good, like it was never meant to be, then it is good."

reply

Is this in response to me?

People will think what I tell them to think!-Charles Foster Kane

reply

No, that's what everybody else is saying. "Well, this movie wasn't supposed to be good, so if it's not good, it achieved what it was going for! Therefor, it must be good!"

reply

I think he was just saying if you take it for what it is and don't over analyse it. I personaly thought it was something to do on a boring night when I was broke (I got it for free at the library) and under a lot of stress, and you know what, while I was watching about it, I wasn't worried about how much money I didn't have, or the fact that everybody and their monkey wanted something....

reply

Well a comedy is supposed to make you laugh -- I have seen soooo many comedies that dont elicit even a chuckle -- but this film had some genuinely funny moments in it. It wasnt supposed to be Oscar material -- just a nice comedy -- but for today's audience it just didnt have enough cursing, sex and toilet humor to make it funny I guess. I thought it enjoyable.

reply

No, but only because 'snuff films' are not universally acceptable...

But rapping kangaroos are acceptable?

Yeah, I agree with you. If you have lower expectations for a film, sometimes it can surprise you how good it is.

I also agree that not every movie has to be an epic 5 out of 5 star.

What I liked most about it was that...hey, here's a novel idea....it wasn't all about mean spirited, crass humor. The whole story was based on friendship, which was a nice change from the more recent mindless comedy that's being churned out.

hey the movie is okay!! okay now ive said it.. good night

You're sort of making a weird argument of "it planned to fail, and it failed so therefore it succeeded".

Nobody wants every movie to be Ben Hur (and certainly not Braveheart, which was an odd example). Even the snobbiest filmgoer will recognise that comedy is a totally legitimate type of film and that's what this was and where the problems were: it just wasn't very funny. The humour was too juvenile and witless for adults to be interested and the plot was widely considered far too adult for the kids who might giggle at the jokes.

There was also the fact that this looked like a regular children's movie. There's a picture of a kangaroo in a hoodie with sunglasses like you said and if you saw the trailer, you would see there was an animated talking kangaroo doing wacky things so pretty much everybody was expecting a kids film about a talking kangaroo. What they saw was a film centred around seedy characters and organised crime where the plot involves the main character trying to not be killed by his own father. Added to the relatively copious and lewd innuendo and it's not such a good movie for kids either.

First let me start by saying, this movie was not a very good movie. Do I think it was terrible and a waste of time? No. The same way I don't think movies like Monty Python and the Holy Grail or Nacho Libre were a waste of time. The fact that this movie was in the comedy category should dispel any thoughts of what some would say "poor acting" because a lot of comedies play off of this "poor acting" to achieve the jokes they are playing towards.

If I was to rate this movie based on it achieving comedy, I'd say a good 3.5/5 without much hesitation. When I wanted to mindlessly watch a movie Kangaroo Jack did make me chuckle at good intervals and it provided a very simple plot to follow. I'm definitely not going to say it was a good movie overall. In fact it wasn't very well casted, the comedy was set for children but the plot was geared toward adults, and the fact that they named the movie Kangaroo Jack when he had only a few scenes definitely make this movie only a 3.5/5 if I'm being generous.

What I'm saying is, the argument of "it planned to fail, and it failed so therefore it succeeded" isn't how I would describe this film. I would, however, describe it as a film that is good if you want a simple, mindless comedy to watch. There are a lot of movies that are poorly made but I still love to watch them. There is a specific type of audience that this movie really resonates with and in all honesty that's how all movies are. Some will like them and some won't.

Mannequin, Killer Klowns from Outer Space, Big Hit...

I can think of stupid movies like this one that are great, but people bash them because they need to lighten up.
