Why isn't the original cut of the movie on the DVD as an alternate cut?

According to the trivia section, practically the entire original cut based on the first screenplay was filmed with a different cast no less.

So why isn't that cut on the DVD as a rough cut or something? This film sure seemed to have gone through hell to be made and its quite controversial when a whole movie is made at first then taken apart refilmed and held back for a year before eventual release in an entirely new form with a modified story, new cast and whatnot and still gets to be somewhat average etc.

You'd think they'd also release the original cut on DVD so we could all see what changes they went through to make this cut of the film happen and how it compares to Wes Craven and Williamson's final envisioned movie.

Alas no.

But i wonder if Cursed's original cut is floating out there somewhere? Hey bootlegs and rare copies of films pop up all the time so who knows.

Hmm? 18 months later and i see tons of similar posts all asking the same question yet still eh? So why doesn't the studio do something. Why doesn't Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson together release the original cut of this flick. Everyone asking for it already.

A handful of posters on IMDB do not a profitable market make. It would be too expensive to release and the studio would make a loss. Such a shame.

Too expensive?? Reshooting a movie with a different cast aint cheap.
They'll eventually put it out to get their money back on this.
Look at all the Unrated,Directors Cut, Ultimate Ed DVDs that come out.
Its all to get your money. So just wait or write to them to make it happen.

No, it wasn't cheap to re-shoot the movie, but that was back when then still had a hope of making some cash. If this movie had been anywhere near as big a hit as Scream was back in '96 (which is what the studio had hopes for) they would have cleaned up despite the extra cost of re-shooting and recasting. Of course, we all know now that it tanked.

The original version of the movie was never fully completed which would mean yet more money for editing, musical score, effects, etc... then who's going to buy it? You? Maybe. Me? Probably. But most people have no interest in a Cursed redux edition, and they would loose more money putting it out than it would bring in.

They might get people to buy it purely out of curiosity. I would and I'm usually opposed to buying a second copy of a movie I already own.

reply

That's a big might. Why would they risk losing money? Most people aren't curious, in fact, most people probably don't even remember anything about the movie other than they didn't like it. These people aren't gonna shell out or the Directors Cut edition.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see this happen, but I think we're kidding ourselves if we say it's ever actually going to happen.

The movie studios put out all those crappy DVD sequels. Since, they are still putting out the sequels, it stands to reason that they are making a profit on them. At the very least, an alternate version would probably get some play on the Sci-fi channel which gives play to some of the worst scifi and horror movies ever produced.

reply

I don't want to see an alternate version. I like the movie the way it is :]

Yes its expensive to release new editions... but ultimately profitable.

Warner Brothers released Paul Schrader's original cut of the 4th Excorcist film as "Dominion: Prequel To The Exorcist". That film went through similar hell to Cursed (probably worse) and is completely different to Renny Harlin's "Excorcist The Beginning".

If Dimension put their thinking caps on and come up with a clever marketing strategy (The version the studio didnt want you to see... or something similar) then there is definately a market for a re-release. Hell, how many movies get multiple releases? Oliver Stone's Alexander had 3!

I agree with the comparison between "Cursed" and the "Exorcist" prequels.

How did this topic flip from being a request to put cut material on an 'already going to release' DVD as a "special feature" to an argument about completely releasing a new version with new scenes? WTF? The guy just wanted a DVD extra. Chill out.

reply

Well obviously there are those of us who would love to see a new cut of the film being released!

reply

As someone stated, Exorcist: The Beginning wasn't a huge box office hit either, yet Warner Bros/Morgan Creek was kind enough to put out the alternate Paul Schrader cut ((big kudos to them because I was curious what would've been).

Unfortunately, neither cut was all that good, still, I got to see 'em BOTH!

A special edition DVD with what was filmed for the original cut included as a bonus or extra would be nice.

reply

Very nice indeed - I would like 2 see the original version. And I'm not the only one. Bring it on.

THIS! I'm dying to see the original version of this film.

It didn't make a lot of money in theatres, it was panned by critics, the unrated version didn't gain the following Dimension probably wanted, and the bluray turned out to be a "meh" transfer of the PG13 version.

reply

The original is out there. Craven has spoke of it in interviews, however, he does not seem to be interested in bringing it to the light of day.

The original version IS out :)
