Nods to The Shining and Misery

Whether intentional or not, I couldn't help but notice two scenes that gave a shout out to Jack and Kathy's most popular characters from other films...

Early in the movie Warren sits at a bar by himself and resembles Jack Torrance speaking to Lloyd the bartender.

Later in the film, Roberta feeds Warren soup, the same as Annie Wilkes did to Paul Sheldon.

You would have loved a scene that was shot, but left out of the completed film. It involved Warren at a coffee shop ordering breakfast and making a couple of special requests. The waitress tells him "no substitutions," and Warren meekly backs off. Total reversal of the scene in Five Easy Pieces, and included in the deleted scenes section of the DVD.

Also interesting to note: in Stephen King's novel Misery there is a part where he references the Shining. Just before Annie "hobbles" Paul Sheldon she talks about a caretaker who burned down the Overlook hotel. Intriguing coincidence that the actor who played the caretaker and the actress who played Annie would one day be in a film together.
