I'm a bit confused (I know, I hate it when people start with that message too. lol)
But it's supposed to start off with Jane's first day at high school, yet when her parents ask her how it went, they also mention that she needs to start planning her 16th b'day party...?
I thought maybe it had just cut a couple of years, but her parents say, in the same conversation of asking about her first day, that she needs to think about her
16th. It doesn't make sense.
She hasn't transferred because she's started the new school with some old friends from primary. Plus Kelly Rowan says that she's there to teach them all through their first year at high school.

Am I missing something? I'm in the UK; We have primary school which is from 5-10/11yrs old. Then secondary school from 11-16. You can then stay on to do higher qualifications (A-Levels).
I always thought that our secondary school, is your high school, right? So what's going on?

I hope this makes relative sense. Has anyone else wondered about the age thing?

ya, i was wondering about that too but here in north america we start highschool, or secondary school, at age 14, so it was really just a couple years off

Where I went to school, high school started in 9th grade in terms of credits towards graduation, but the Freshman were at the junior highs with the seventh and 8th graders. So our first year at the high school was Sophomore year. Most students were 15 going on 16 that year.

I can't recall if it was said in the movie, but did it take place in Northern California anywhere? I know of several schools in the Sacramento area where 10th grade is the first year of high school, physically.

Absolutely none of that message made sense to me! LOL.
I'm in the UK and we have a totally different name for all our education years and exams etc.
Kind of annoying sometimes when an American movie's on and a character's in whatever grade, and you're like 'wtf does that mean? Is the kid 8 or 18?'

In the United States there are three levels of primary education: Elementary (K-5/6), Junior High/Middle School (terminology differs) (6/7-8/9), High School (9/10-12)

As per your reply to someone else, it really gets annoying when Europeans complain about a movie that was made and based on a culture because that culture doesn't sync with theirs..."oooh our school system is different...*boo hoo*"...complain about something worthwhile like Bush's ineptitude...

My district was really *beep* up. We had two schools, one K-6 and one 7-12.

I'll try lol ... Elementary school is kindergarten thru 6th grade. Junior high is 7th and 8th. None of the classroom take while in kindergarten through 8th head count towards your credits needed to graduate high school. High school (when graduation credits begin) is 9th grade through 12th grade.

Now to the confusing part lol ... in some districts, an elementary school will have kindergarten through 4th grade, then have a separate school for 5th and 6th grade students (sometimes referred to as middle school). The 7th, 8th, and 9th grades are held in a junior high (even though 9th grade is "technically" the first year for your graduation requirements to kick in. 10th, 11th, and 12th grades go to the high school.

(That all being said there might be smaller districts in which elementary school holds kindergarten through 6th grade, junior high 7th, 8th and 9th, then high school for 10th, 11th and 12th. Then there are other districts that might be a little different. Most high schools though will hold 10th, 11th and 12th grades.)
