Am I the only person who enjoyed this?

Judging from most of the posts on here it would appear so. Personally I was a little biased going into this because I love Glenn Close, Patricia Clarkson, and Mary Kaye Place. Seeing the three of them in a film together was a dream come true. But as far as the film itself I thought it really worked. Many times compilation films end up leaving the viewer with to much to ponder and never give closure to any of the characters. I thought that the character depth in this was fantastic. Glenn Close gave a superb performance as the distraught mother and housewife dealing with her sons coma. Another performance that leads me to the same question. Glenn Close still does not have an oscar? Patricia Clarkson gave her normal quirky performance that only furthered my love for her, and as usual Mary Kaye Place was steller. Though I found some of the story line to be a little too Soap Operaish, I personally enjoyed the film very much!

I adore this movie.

I really enjoyed this movie, and that's coming from someone who typically only watches the mainstream action, comedy and horror flicks. Excellent acting all around, especially from Glenn Close. A couple of her scenes almost brought me to tears, she's that good.

I want to see it =(

Just seen it and it was pretty good. I think it is totally Underrated!
I know it's not American Beauty, Donnie Darko, or Little Children, just to name a few similar movies, but I enjoyed very much. :D

This movie is much better than American Beauty and Donnie Darko.

I haven't seen Little Children.

This movie is simply brilliant to me. Some many colorful characters and plots/subplots coming together at the end of the movie. I wish now I had been able to see it when it first premiered in the theatres.

I like this movie a lot as well. In fact I liked it so much that in addition to buying the DVD, I also bought the book by A. M. Homes. The book contains ten unrelated short stories and after reading them I was even more impressed with the movie than I had been before I read it. Rose Troche did a terrific job in melding most of those stories together to make her movie. The biggest surprise to me was the second story, 'Looking for Johnny,' for in it Randy kidnaps a boy named Erol and not a girl named Sam (Samantha) Jennings.

Don't feel bad about not seeing The Safety of Objects in theatres, SleuthhoundSeburo. According to boxofficemojo.com, the film opened in only 32 theatres and expanded to just 43. It took in $81,250.00 during its opening weekend and totalled $319,299.00 during its entire theatrical run. I never saw it in a movie theatre either. In fact I don't even know if ever played down here in Miami. Oh well, at least I've got the DVD.

I read the book a few months ago and I just finished watching the movie and I have to say I loved it and Rose Troche did an awesome job as well as all the actors invovled. You can tell it was a labor of love and I think the stories were tied in together well. Too bad they left the pee in the plant part out on Jims part.lol

Interesting that people have strong negative reactions to this movie. I think it's a terrific little film. Moira Kelly and Durmot Mulrooney (SP?) are really under-rated actors, and they really shine in this film. Patrcia Clarkson is, as always, great in this film. Really touching. All around, a little gem of a movie that ahrdly anyone has seen.

I too was fascinated by this film and would put it up there with Donnie, American Beauty and Little Children.
After reading many of the other posts my assumptions that the internet is being run predominately by idiots was confirmed.

I have to admit that i too was a little biased, i have a highly handicapped sister who cannot talk or acknowledge others and who requires all the assistance and care that Paul needed. And perhaps becasue of this i found Glen Close so moving she brought me to tears through the entire seccond half of the film.

But overall it was beautifully intimate and amazingly written/ filmed. I couldn't help but buy the DVD.

I'm shocked to read that anyone had negative reactions and shocked that it's only rated 6.5. This is the most perfect film I've seen in years, and I watch about 1500 movies yearly. What a brilliantly conceived, maturely observed, wise overview of the state of the American family today. Alternately shocking, hilarious, and heartbreaking.

I don't think it's just this board...people go to every movie board just to bitch and complain about how much they hated the movie. When I hate a movie, I don't want anything to do with it afterwards, I don't go looking to announce it somewhere. I just don't get it. At least if you're going to say you didn't like a movie, make some points WHY, some constructive criticism, instead of just whining and being insulting!

Constructive criticism? Okay...

To take such a wonderful, lush, grotesque and dark collection of short stories, throw them in a blender, throw the result at the wall and see what sticks is criminal...This is cinematic dumbing down of the worst order, made more offensive by Glenn Close turning in an amazing performance that's utterly wasted.

Character motivation is not so much surrendered as bludgeoned into mental retardation by melding characters from the original source material that are, in fact, polar opposites (the middle class, driven pot plant urinating worker ant and the down at heel sociopathic bullet catcher) - dramatically nothing makes sense. Some of the most wonderful observations from the book disappear or are glossed over: The homosexual crisis moment of the Barbie/Ken story appears in a split second and is nothing but a homage to the book. The twisted, hilarious, paedo-kidnap story is neutered with the most bizarre clause - not only is the kidnapper no longer sexually motivated, but the kidnapee is a girl who looks like a boy.

The weaving together of plot lines at the end is worthy of Dynasty-Dallas at its worst.

That the likes of talented indie champions such as Christine Vachon and Rose Troche have handled A.M Homes book in such a terribly fumbling manner is depressing.

This film has no balls and no point, and comparisons to Altman are an insult to the late director.

I was just going to suggest that this movie pull its head out of its own ass, but what you said works too.

I love this movie! :D And seeing this thread, I'd say you're not alone :)

I just saw this movie for the first time, and I fell in love with it. I thought it was absolutely perfect.

I enjoyed it a lot. I understand why some people might not have liked it, it was rather slow-moving, but it honestly had my attention the whole way through. I don't think I would have enjoyed it as much if I wasn't paying complete attention. There are so many details that are easy to miss that really make the movie.
