Yeah, The DaVinci Code didn't come out until a good ten years after Possession, but this movie still reminds me of a combo of it plus The French Lieutenant's Woman.

There's another novel, can't think of the name though (bugging me that I've forgotten it) portraying a pair of academics unraveling a mystery not unlike Roland and Maud do in this novel. If I could remember the book I could check if it was written before or after Possession. (IIRC, it was before but I cannot say for certain.)
