I heard this is being released on DVD sometime

I attended a taping of "Inside the Actor's Studio" where Liza was the guest and she revealed that "Liza with a 'Z'" is indeed being released on DVD sometime. Don't know when, though. But I do know that I have to buy it. I've only heard the album but I have yet to see it complete with the inimitable (did I spell that right) direction and choreography of Mr. Bob Fosse.

LIZA WITH A Z will be played on the Showtime network in April, just before the DVD is released. From what I've read, they've restored it and, from seeing the clips on INSIDE THE ACTORS STUDIO Sunday night, it looks great. (I've had a bootleg VHS for sometime now, and it was very faded when I got it; so, this will be a treat.) I also read that they've completely restored the soundtrack (from mono to 5.1 surround) from the recordings Phil Ramone had produced for the album and from all the audio stock Liza had saved. Sounds like the new version will be more pristine than the original that aired in '72.

I have just checked on Amazon and you can now get notification of when this is to be released - so it shouldn't be too long now.

I work at a subtitling firm and am editing the subtitles for the upcoming DVD release of this concert. Can anyone tell me what "toni cognoscenti" means in "Ring Them Bells"? That's what it says in the script.

First of all, it's cool that you work for a subtitling firm! Even though I'm not hearing-impaired, I love to watch shows with the close captioning on.

Not sure what "toni cognoscenti" means...however, "congnoscente" is an old Latin term meaning "knowledgable in a subject," so the name is likely intended to be a play on words.

Okay, I think I've figured out the answer to your question regarding the "toni congnoscenti" line in the song "Ring Them Bells."

Here goes: The word "toni," if I'm correct, should be spelled "tony," which is defined as "marked by an aristocratic or high-toned manner or style." The word "cognoscenti," used to refer to a group of people, means those who are ostentatiously "in the know." Listen to the way Liza sings that line--she suddenly adopts an exaggeratedly aristocratic accent. Of course, the character Liza is playing in the song is decidedly UN-aristocratic, and so hanging out with the "tony congoscenti" is not at all for her.

Synonyms would be "glitterati" and "jet set".

"Don't call me 'honey', mac."
"Don't call me 'mac'... HONEY!"
