Does anyone understand...

The significance of the tree??? I have no idea how that fits into this movie at all, but I could just be missing something. Hopefully someone can help me?!

It's a Japanese folk tale but I never got what the tree means either :(

Just watched and I've had so little sleep that my critical reasoning skills are probably way off, but I saw some of the 'bitter harvest' elements implied - you know, reaping what you sow - as well as permanence and regeneration, involved in the perpetual grudge and the thing about your children and your grandchildren...only way for Gus and Eileen to escape was to leave the area. And stuff like that. There's probably something more obvious and I just don't get it.
