Didn't even need the ghost

Good movie, but the ghost angle was superfluous. It didn't add much to the main story, especially since Jaime is the one to provide the flashback of Santi's death. And the kids overpowered Jacinto on their own. The ghost just provided a karmic bookend.

The supernatural elements aren't a bad idea per se, but I think they were too blatant about it, what with Santi's ghost just showing up on screen and bleeding all over the place with his gaping head wound. I think it would've been better if the movie never showed him so concretely so as to keep the audience guessing if he really exists or if Carlos is just spooked from the other kids' ghost stories. Maybe only show his arm reaching up from the depths to pull Jacinto down at the end. Just my two cents though.

Yeah I kinda agree. I GET what Del Toro was going for with the Santi element, but it could've been a much tighter script to make it gel together better with everything else; especially once it's revealed what Santi wants, as is I couldn't help but to go "...well why didn't you say that in the FIRST PLACE, kid?! Could've save a wholllllllle lotta trouble for everyone." Sure sure, Carlos is scared of a ghost and all, but I dunno. I just feel like Santi needed more of a presence to let me get to know him and justify him creeping around all over the place doing bugger all until the last scene of the movie. Maybe I'm missing something.

This is one of those movies that go in the category that I appreciate more than I actually like, if you know what I mean. I may watch it again sometime just to make sure how I feel about it, maybe I'll feel different about it once I let it marinate in my brain a bit, but I don't think I'll be in any rush to do so with.

Ok, then who let's them out?

Um, the Dr's ghost let them out, not the ghost of Santi that the OP is complaining about. Santi was useless. Jaime should have told the Dr right away that Jacincto killed Santi. And since he didn't Santi should have haunted him until he did - instead of waiting for some noob boy to come and then sharing his sad story.
