Marcel almost made me want to beat him

I was so mad he left Anna Bella like that. But even he admited his stupidity at the end. I want to know if they stayed together and had kids.

I was mad with Vincent Dazincourt the way he used her got her pregenant and dropped her...especially as fine as she was.

In the book Marcel loves her and wants her. But because he is in fact a black man he can't have her. So he forces himself to stay away from her and even treats her badly so she wouldn't love him. Of course with how they feel about each other, even the smallest things hurt each other.

Vincent ditched her because he didn't want to end up like Philippe - Marcel's father. He doesn't want his own child showing up and embarrassing him. Like Marcel did to Philippe. I'll read up on it and tell you what happened to Anna Bella and the guys.

I know the post I am responding to is almost two years old, but I thought it would do justice to the story to have a correction on file.

In the book, Marcel is 14 years old. All his life has been geared to him becoming an educated gens de couleur and go to Paris. From the time Marcel was born, it was agreed that Monsieur Philippe would send Marcel to Paris. Marcel had grown up, hearing of Paris, dreaming of Paris, and talking about Paris. Going to Paris is his life's dream, and the only thing Cecile ever really wanted for him.

Marcel does fall in love with Anna Bella. But being too young to marry, what can he do? He is scheduled to go to France when he is 18, college for at least four years there, what would happen with the only plan in his life if he takes on the burden of a wife?

Anna Bella could have said no. Marcel told her it was her choice, she didn’t have to accept if Dazincourt’s proposal was not as she wanted it, and despite Madame Elsie's pressure on Anna Bella to enter into Plaçage, she could have held out. She had money from her father, and from her grandfather Old Captain, and Madame Elsie wasn't long for the world. But Anna Bella knew Vincent Dazincourt, and felt tender for him because she had seen him at the boarding house grieving the death of his daughter, Lisa Rose. She accepted that as things were, Marcel really couldn't offer her anything, and freely chose Michie Vince.

Marcel could not have passed for white, and being a colored man, could not have married a white woman. At the end of the book, Marcel is 15, and Anna Bella refused to marry him... for a while, anyway.

He was just turning to go when he stopped with a start.

Well my interpretation was that they did not end up together in the end. Otherwise, they would have probably showed them both reminiscing instead of just him by himself at the end. But, I agree that it is open to interpretation as the author probably did not want to dash the hopes of viewers wanting things to end happily for everyone.
