The real question is how many in the cast of the 'gens de couleur libres' are in reality mixed black and white blood. They are absolutely very attractive people.

The availability of the show on DVD helps, too. As to your real question, pretty much anybody with light skin is mixed at some point in their ancestry.
shareBasically, almost *all* African Americans (blacks) are "mixed" at some point in the ancestry -- it's what makes us "African-Americans" (vs. Africans). And really, phenotype has very little to to with it: You can have a white grandmother and be light-skinned or brown-skinned, it just depends on what genes become visible. And particulalry in New Orleans (where I'm from) and in the Caribbean in general, sisters and brothers within the same family can have skin tones varying from almost-white to cocoa brown.
This film/book has been popular in Louisiana before President Obama became POTUS. An incidently, Obama has more "African" blood than most African Americans -- and surely more than black folks in New Orleans, since our heritage is so varied in that part of the U.S.-- since he has an African father, straight from the continent of Africa (and therein not a product of the Diaspora and the triangular slave trade with its inherent race-mixing).
Yes, yes, that's a technicality but clearly the OP wasn't talking about African Americans, i.e. black, who are "mixed" at some point. They're talking about who are mixed, as in very close African and European heritage. When your 'mixed' heritage gets beyond grandparents, then yeah your reaching.
