What I don't understand, is why did Marcel have that blonde hair,
when both his white father and colored mother were brunettes??!!

Anyone have any feedback on this??

My Niece was born to two black parents (both caramel skinned and dark haired) and she had hair almost the same color as his. It was very blonde and a bit red. But as she grew up it darkened. Maybe Marcel stayed in the sun more often so it could be sun bleached. lol.

ROFLMAO!!

In the book it seemed that The man who wound up taking care of him was not his father. Marcel's father's father-in-law was actually Marcel's father who was a blond in the book.

Therefore Marcel's father's wife was actually Marcel's sister!

It's been awhile since I read the book but I think that Phillipe was a blond in the book. Marcel's mother's first "husband/whatever" did get her pregnant but each of the children died shortly after birth. She often visits their graves and there is a quick scene of her doing this near the beginning of the movie.

Marcel was not a half brother to his father's wife.

You're right. In the book, the Dazincourts were dark haired. (Dolly Rose's daughter Lisa had Vincent's dark hair, and Aglae's was described at the end as salt-and-pepper.) That's how Aglae knew at a glance that Lisette was Philippe's daughter, and made him send both Zazu and Lisette away from Bontemps. Cecile also knew immediately who fathered Lisette. It was silly of them to make sure Lisette and Marcel had blonde hair, and then make Philippe Ferronaire dark haired. But I have to admit, Peter Gallagher's Philippe was spot on!

Cecile lost 2 babies of Magloire Dazincourt's. She was pregnant with a third child when Magloire died. The first time Philippe goes to visit Cecile after Magloire's death, Philippe reflects that she had "lost both her protector and her expected child," and since Cecile mentions only two graves to Marie, there is little doubt that Cecee had miscarried that third baby.

He was just turning to go when he stopped with a start.

If either of his parents had White heritage with those light hair color genes that gives him a good chance of having it too. It's the same as two White brunettes having ginger kids and blondes, happens all the time.

It bothered me but not as much as his acting

reply

He didn't seem or look mixed to me. His hair was very nappy and he had a wide, typically African nose.

reply

You've completely missed the point: It was deliberate.

Even in the book he had "nappy" hair "wide, typically African nose" - Marcel wasn't able to pass like his sister.

reply

OK, I understand now. I didn't read the book. Thank you!

reply

In the book he's light skinned with blond hair.-- My daughter who is mixed has same complexion and we her parents have dark hair and eyes. But her grandmother on black fathers' side was light like her and the rest of her white mothers' family has lighter hair and eyes. That's genetics--lol

reply

weird question since the blond hair could have been from grandparents, look at singer cher and ex husband sony bono, both were brunettes but their child chastity bono was born with blond hair due to cher's grandmother.

Genetics. It could have come from his mother's father or maybe his father's side of the family.
