...is it really that bad?

i keep finding the R1 2-disc DVD in bargain bins and i wonder if i should pick it or not..is it really that bad? i love so many "bad movies" because they are so bad it's funny.or maybe Pinocchio doesn't fall in this category too?

I saw the movie and I loved it, I don't know why so many people hated it. I suggest renting it first and then buying it. If it was at any of the Bargin Bins at my store, I'd buy it right away

This film is not bad at all!
It is a superb film
It is so true to the original story and concept. Brilliantly devoid of any farcical moments.
Surprisingly, it is dubbed as 'farce' and rejected.

It's no bad... it's worse!!! If you want to see a beautiful and moving Pinocchio, try to watch Luigi Comencini's version. This one is a waste of time. You can rent it out to judge by yourself, but do please try to find "Le avventure di Pinocchio" by Comencini.

Benigni grew up with Chaplin and other physical comics...and in this world, comedy like that is seen as old hat. They want dirt and filth that degrates women and venerates the drug culture (also called a teen movie). Not that that comedy genre should be driven to extinction, it's just that what ever happend to Marxists of the Groucho variety?

Another reason that this movie was driven to turkey-dom was the fact that everybody wants the Disney version to be the only one, when it's the gospel according to Walt Disney and not according to Carlo Collodi. Then, came "Adventures of Pinocchio" in 1996. Now, THIS (with some exeptions) is a fair interpretation.

In conclution, Benigni does a very good version, but it's just another one...
The 1996 version, too me, is more real. The 1941 version is a classic, of course. And, Benigni's version fluffy. But, no less lovable.

And, I must say I love the English Language dub...Brecken Meyer is very funny!

Not that bad, but doesn't do any justice to the book. It is just a lifeless transition of images, lacking the poignancy and the wit of the book. There were rare cases of funny, memorable or touching moments, but on the whole is pretty lame.

This is Roberto Benigni’s first nomination for Worst Actor, but in 1993 he had been nominated for Worst New Star for Son of the Pink Panther. He lost to Pauly Shore. Most Americans weren’t familiar with Benigni until 1997 when he co-wrote, directed and starred in the Holocaust comedy-drama, Life is Beautiful. That film began a very brief love affair with Benigni which culminated in a Best Actor Oscar. By the time Benigni reached the stage to accept his award, the Academy was second-guessing their decision.

It turns out America already had a wacky comedian who was overly eager to make life affirming movies. And frankly, we were all getting a little worn out by Robin Williams at the time. The last thing we needed was an Italian actor honing in on Williams’ tragic-comic territory. Audiences were ready to deport Benigni by the time the ceremony was over.

Five years later, Benigni was back with an update on the classic story of Pinocchio. Pinocchio reunited Benigni with his Life Is Beautiful co-writer, Vincenzo Cerami. But lightning did not strike twice for Benigni and Cerami. It turns out American audiences weren’t all that interested in watching a 50-year-old Italian (dubbed into English by one of our least-treasured actors, Breckin Meyer) portraying a puppet who yearns to be a real boy. Emphasis on the word “boy”. Benigni was about four decades too old for the part.

The mere fact that a middle-aged man cast himself as Pinocchio is arguably justification for a Worst Actor win. Since Benigni was an Oscar winner, the Razzies were obviously looking to take him down a peg. It’s kind of their whole thing. Was he the Worst Actor of the year? No. Adriano Giannini has him beat for bad acting. But Benigni was easily the most misguided and self-deluded actor of the year.

Disney’s version of Pinocchio contains some of the darkest and scariest moments in the history of animation. But even that was a Disnified take on the source material. Walt worried that Collodi’s mischievous protagonist wasn’t sympathetic. The novel was basically a series of episodes in which Pinocchio misbehaves and suffers the consequences of his misdeeds. Benigni’s movie is more faithful to the book in that respect.

The result is a kid’s movie that is sure to traumatize any children who might accidentally see it. Aside from homoerotic subtext that verges on text, Benigni’s Pinocchio is strangely fascinated with death. After encountering a tombstone which leads the puppet to believe that the Blue Fairy is dead, he wonders aloud, “How do you become dead? I wanna be dead too!” There is even a scene in which Pinocchio is hanged…
