Rushed...

Just watched the movie (cheapo bargain bin from titsup video rental store). The characters were just hanging there waiting to be fleshed-out, never were. Truncated ending. As mentioned elsewhere in the comments the accents are varied and not at all "Beatlesque" the father is played by a born and raised Scouser--so probably more accurate than the comic-book Liverpool accents you hear from Beatles impersonators. There were many Irish accents too -- it was an Irish community; which leads me to my observation(s):

I take a bit of an issue with the whole Blackshirt story. The father becoming a facist and asking his Irish friends to get out of his country doesn't ring true. Like me and many of my family the Irish blood runs deep and I have never experieinced or heard of such experiences handed down to me in my family. The flaw in that particular part of the story is that with the last name Sullivan, being Roman-Catholic and naming your son Liam (Irish version of William) shows that his own Irish roots would have been very recently transplanted to England.

Going to do some fascist terrorism dressed in your best fascist uniform seams a bit comicbook; even the Boston Tea Partiers dressed up as natives when they did their bit of terrorism.

The only saving grace was as much as the teacher and priest were dogmatic bullyers, they did show some human traits and the filmmakers didn't try to introduce mollestation -- as would be the tendancy today.

Anyaways, just my thoughts.
