First off, if you paid attention you'd see that Gamespot's review system says that a 6.4 is considered FAIR, as in better than not good. Just because they didn't say it was over-the-top great isn't cause for getting your panties in a bunch.
I do agree with their judgement that Legend of Dragoon is very (as they put it) "sentai" Meaning it was VERY formulaic. There wasn't really a whole lot about this game that was truly original; they quite clearly just took notes from other successful RPGs and threw them in a pot and made a game of its contents. You have 7 dragoons, one for each elemental. Fire, Water, Thunder, Wind, Dark, Earth and Light. That seems familiar.
The characters were incredibly generic AND followed suit from other RPGs. Dart is the super-heroic protagonist with a strong sense of every honorable personality trait. Shana is Dart's childhood friend and GUESS WHAT? SHE LOVES DART! Aww. It even plays that formulaic music-box music when they have a tender moment. Rose is the distant, cold, unemotional member of the team with a dark past. Meru is the super spunky, annoying girly member of the team. Albert is the skirt-chasing king. Kongol is the giant brute who is obviously of little intelligence, just wants a friend, etc. Haschel is the typical martial arts master who needs to learn to make love, not war. Meh.
Need I go on? Don't get me wrong this game was fun to play. The crowning achievement for this game is the soundtrack, IMO. I do believe most people are only give this game SO much credit is just because they want to stray from the pack of people who rave over Final Fantasy. Being off the bandwagon is pretty cool!
