Its not a real city hence you don't see any specific landmarks to real cities. hence the name, it is merely called "The City" (In THE CITY Respect is... EVERYTHING)

i think u got a gd point here, if we know what city its in, the GTA team that created the PS2 games could make another game based on that city as they did the others

The entire game takes place in LIBERTY CITY (though it is not really mentioned as so). However the game takes place in three different areas of LIBERTY CITY, the residential area, commercial district and lastly the industrial sector. There are even several places mentioned in the city (i.e. street names and locales) which are used again later in GTA3.

Only GTA (the first game) takes place in the three different cities: San Andreas, Liberty and Vice.

[EDIT] On hindsight I have just looked up info on GTA2 again and found for some odd reason that they no longer refer to the city as LIBERTY CITY but as ANYWHERE CIY (according to Wikipedia). I have no idea when this change occurred or why this happened. But in any case I think it was dumb how they have tried to create a chronological timeline to correspond with the three following sequels, simply for the benefit of those sequels. Therefore the city is supposed to be set in the distant future, taking place after the sequels - I think this new story sucks though.
